Oscar Klefbom for Kevin Bieksa

Forget about the NTC. Would the fan bases agree to this ?

Oilers need a tough veteran on the back end in the worst way. Plus with Nurse in their org, they will have cap structure issues if they both pan out in the future.

The Canucks have enough veterans to speed up Klefs development, the same was Mattias Ohlund mentored Edler. The Canucks will also be rebuilding on the fly by replacing an older player with a younger one.

The Canucks don't need to rebuild on the fly. This seems to address just the Oilers imo.

Bieksa is a better albeit much older version of Jeff Petry.

The Oilers wouldn't even consider it when you realize that at 32, Bieksa would likely be declining when the Oilers are actually Stanley Cup contenders, while Klefbom would be rounding into the "Edler-like" defenseman you've described.

Bieksa is more valuable this year and maybe next, but after that not so much

Bieksa is on the decline, while Klefbom is on the climb.

Bieska is a second pairing guy soon to be bottom pairing. Klefbom is bottom pairing soon to be top pairing.

Even if Klefbom maxes out at a second pairing guy the Oilers would be loosers of the deal in 2-3 years. And if Klefbom becomes top pairing.... oh god

D men play good into their mid 30's and beyond. Look at Mark Striet, Lidstriom, Schnieder ect.

Klef will never be Edler-like unless he has veterans around him in his early years. That isn't something the Oilers can offer at this point.

Not sure I would want to trade Bieksa to the Oilers for just Klefbom, he's a great prospect, but not worth sending KB3 to EDM for IMO.

Oilers could get at least 3 or 4 years of solid defending from Beiksa. That could be the difference they need. Even 2 years is 2 years.

Klef didn't do much in camp. Why ?

Ference is there for the next 4 years and he's a veteran, Smid has been around long enough he counts as a veteran at this point... Nick Schultz is there for now and he's a veteran though he's likely gone sooner rather than later. Hell even Petry isn't too many years away from being something of a veteran.

Are you lukewarm on the idea though ?

I just know that we could develop Klef. I'm not sure that the Oilers can.

Smid is the only one I would count because he is a veteran Oiler. Edler and Beiksa are Canucks picks.

Ohlund and Salo were longtime Canuck veterans that helped Edler develop.

I would say Klefbom catches Bieksa in 2 years Whether its due to his progression or Bieskas decline or a combo. Bieksa showed signs of decline last year already. And I would not feel comfortable mortgaging 8 years of 1st/2nd pairing of Klefbom for 3 years of 2nd/3rd pairing of Bieksa.

Not to be a homer but Belov looks to be a good addition to the Oilers so maybe he can do what Bieksa can do, albeit not as well, but doesnt cost a blue chip prospect

Didnt do too much in Youngstars tourny but that was his first time in NA and hadnt played a game in a year. Got better as the tourny progressed. Was the best D vs golden bears but get elbowed and had to sit out some games.

Played good in his preseason game, nothing impressive but a good outing. But by all reports hes on fire in the AHL camps

He was injured all last season. First game action in a year...

Not developing him would me rushing him into the NHL. He's going to OKC for a season to learn the NA game. Besides, Oilers have too many D on one-way contracts right now and don't have spots for a raw rookie.

As a neutral I think this is a good deal for both teams. Canucks get younger with good upside and the Oilers get some immediate defensive help. Added bonus of the Canucks being one of the few likely playoff teams with significant cap space to potentially make some deadline moves.

Klefborn is probably the #2 d prospect in their system. I don't think EDM touches it.

I'm not even tepid to the idea.

No thank you.

I like Bieksa, but I think we'll be alright to start the season.

I see so you'll just move the goalposts then eh? What difference does it make if Ference is new to the Oilers? He's still a veteran defenceman who can help a young defenceman learn what it takes to be an NHL defenseman.

Wow, from the way people are talking around here you'd think Bieksa will be out of the league in two years. Nobody ever has a down year.

Also, for the guy who said Bieksa would be washed up by the time the Oilers are ready to contend - how many more crappy seasons do they need?

Yeah but the whole damn team is one big prospect. They do not need the trouble of properly developing Klef. They need guys that can help on the back end NOW.
