Confirmed: How the NHL Lottery Will Look

Just on tsn, bob mckenzie stated how the draft lottery would break down....

on July 21st (next thursday) they will hold the draft lottery ..... this is how the breakdown of the odds will take place:

- every team will have 3 ping pong balls
- if u made the playoffs in any of the last 3 years, u lose a ping pong ball
- if u made the playoffs in all of the past 3 years, u are only allowed to lose 2 balls
- if u had the top overall pick in the last 4 years, u lose a ping pong ball
- if u dealt for the number 1 pick (like columbus did to get nash, taking the 1st from florida) u dont lose a ball, the team that originally had the #1 pick will lose it
- Snake Draft
- 7 Rounds

Thats it. Rangers will have the best chance for Crosby with Columbus, Buffalo and Pittsburgh.

Here is a Link and a breakdown of how many balls each team gets. Buffalo also has 3 balls. 18 teams only have one ball (including WSH), 8 Teams have 2 balls, and 4 have all 3 balls. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/feature.asp?fid=7314

Rangers have 6.3% chance of landing crosby

That is a beautiful system from a Ranger perspective. We deserve as good a shot as anyone from the last 7 years

Well its not confirmed. If Larry Brooks wrote something like that it wouldnt be confirmed, they're just reporters. I don't doubt its like that but I'm trying to hold back my opinion untill the NHL says something.

washington getting one ball is a travesty. Good thing Phili and Detroit also get one ball.

This smells like scam to get him to NY. But watch the league send him to Buffalo where he'll rott for ten years.

How do you figure a 15% chance? By all the other calculations, we have something like a 6% chance.

the article is now posted on www.tsn.ca.

Even with this 'weighted' system, the Rangers only have a 3/45 chance, or 6.7%. Meaning we're probably not getting Crosby.

I messed up...divided 45/3 should have been the other way around.

Bleh...better than the un-weighted scenario, so I'm not going to complain about it. Just gonna keep my digits crossed. However, as I've said in another thread I'm not too hopeful. Hell, I'd bet on Jesus Christ coming to the Garden to sing the anthem during the home opener before I'd put money on hearing Slats at the podium announce: "With the 1st overall selection the Rangers pick..."

Why can't this team get lucky...just once!!

They got Ovechkin and playoff berths, stop the whining already. Yep, its a scam also to get him in BUF, CLB.

If that website is accurate as to who has how many, The rangers have a 6.7% chance of winning the lottery.

I just hope we don't pick later than 6th, that'd be utter BS. I don't even care that much about Crosby, I just want as high a pick as we can get.

Most def. I think we have a very good shot at picking top ten being 1 of only 3 teams to have three balls. I hope they re-assign the balls to the worst too, that would be a tremendous help.

Until hearing otherwise, I would assume that once a team is picked, the rest of their balls are just taken out of the picture.

Probably not literally. It would be a pain in the ass to physically remove them after every pick. They would just continue picking balls and discard the ones from teams that have already been picked.

I know this year 2nd pick may be far from 1st, but it is b/c 1st pick is so good. Well, what's the chance to get 2nd? 17%?

The team with more than one ball should return the unused balls back to allow other teams to pick. After all it's only 30 balls in the drum.

If a team who had 1 ball got the first pick, the chances would be 6.8%.
If a team who had 2 balls got the first pick, the chances would be 7.0%.
If CLB or BUF got the first pick, the chances would be 7.14%.

Worst case scenario: 10 teams with only 1 ball get the first 10 picks, then the Rangers' chances of getting the 11th pick would be 8.6%.

Well now we know. Perfect scenario = Rangers at #1 and Flyers at #30 (meaning the Blueshirts get the first selection in the second round).

Next question: When does the lottery actually take place?

Throw in Toronto at 29, means we get the first two in round 2.

Of course, we'll select 25th and the Flyers and Toronto will 1 and 2 overall.
