To Washington

Josh Bailey

To NY Islanders

Michal Neuvirth

I know washington has enough depth on offense but with them having holby they don't need Michal Neuvirth and Michal Neuvirth deserves to be a #1 on another team and the islanders has so much depth on offense they can offend to trade Bailey to get a future #1.

I know it can be better but as a starting point what do you think needs to be done to get this deal right

I won't comment on Washington's perspective - I'll leave that to Caps fans.

From Isles perspective, Bailey is just not going to get moved. Isles management signed him to a five year deal because they still believe in his upside, and he is a very valuable top six forward for them now.

I also don't see the Isles open to making a move in goal at the present time, with Nabby playing so well and popular with his teammates.

Its a good try, but I don't see it.

BTW, I'm not sure where you are seeing all this depth on Isles offense. Moulson is an impending UFA, so the Isles have exactly one player signed for next season who has ever scored more than 60 points (Tavares). Strome and Nelson, and maybe Lee should eventually step in, but they have several stopgaps signed until then (Regin and Bouchard) who will likely be gone by then.

This is a really hard one for the Capitals to turn down. Bailey is a really nice asset, and I would love to trade Neuvirth for him. But right now his cap hit is $800k higher than Neuvy's, and that pushes Washington above the salary cap. Beyond that, he hasn't played center in a while, and the Caps are loaded on the wings right now. While nobody in Washington would complain about bolstering the left side with Bailey (which helps push Laich to center), it's not a particularly pressing area of need (right now Erat is playing on the 4th line). Making one of Chimera, Erat, or Fehr a healthy scratch isn't worth making the back-up goaltending position into a question mark. Especially with Holtby's slow start to the season.

Isles are not going to trade Bailey for a goalie.

Can't see any reason for the Isles to do this. Neuvirth has not proven he is anything more than a decent starting goalie. And average goalies just aren't worth that much.

The Isles are committed to Nabokov for this season, and going forward there will be some quality free agents available (Hiller, Miller, Elliot etc). Neuvirth is younger, but is he that much better than Bryzgalov that the Isles would give up a player they believe can be a quality second liner?

I don't think the Isles are going to be making any moves at all. For right now they're set with their team.

We do, in the worst way. Erskine is just terribad. He would probably be a healthy scratch on most teams.

If Urbom could become a competent 2LD...

I would definitely be interested in Neuvirth, but Garth isn't moving Bailey.

Goaltending will be addressed this upcoming summer I would think, so ask then.

Josh Bailey struggled through NYI's bungled developmental procedure only to finally emerge as a solid top-6 winger. Not many players are smart and tough enough to be consistently placed in a position to fail early in their careers only to come out good.

There's no point compounding NYI's offseason mistake in not acquiring a goalie by overpaying for one now. And insofar as NYI buys a goalie, it will be for prospects or futures, because NYI is entering a win-now mode, and NYI has depth from which to trade.
