None of us know exactly what they want, but I would guess the player we need is the following

Top pairing potential (not your fifth best because of depth, your third because of depth)
Player on the more Physical side
Defense first, not looking for a big point player

Assume everyone is available except for Getz, Selanne and probably Perry.

I like Coburn if he can be had

I would hope this trade is not for one year and it is someone that can still be with the Ducks for many years.

Yes, top 4 d regularly clear waivers. Oh wait, I guess that's just me "spinning it".

Coburn and edler would be most likely targets IMO. Not sure if we can get either though. But I really don't trust Lebrun. I think he is purely speculating.

As a Pens fan I'd be interested in something around Despres and Gibson

Why would they want Holland? Grabo has been awesome for them. I also doubt that they'd trade Alzner.

Needs to be.
Young
Immediately able to help
Second pair or better
Defensive
Reasonable cap hit.

Cant think of anything thats available that fits the description
You kind of described Matt Niskanen, or depending on who the Ducks would want to give up, maybe even Simon Despres if that gets the Pens a better prospect/return.

If Nikitin was available, I could see some interest in him. I don't see any with Savard or Goloubef, as they are too inexperienced.

is toronto really confident enough in its defensive depth at this point that they need to be moving people at that position? i think they should keeping hold of the defense they have for now...because, unless the deal involves a 1c (which i'm sure it doesn't) do they really need another forward?

What would Despres+Niskanen get us? i'd want a forward back in return from the Ducks.

We don't need multiple defensemen. It looks like a stopgap is what's needed, something like the Lovejoy trade last season.

The way I read it was they need someone in on the short-term because of injuries to Sbisa and Souray. Although, I don't know the extent of their injuries.

I thought of it more as a depth move or swap of NHL-ready prospects.

Something like a Holzer or Brennan for a 5-7 rd. draft pick. Both cleared waivers a week or so ago. But, the situation in Anaheim may have changed since then and it wouldn't be the first time a player has cleared waivers and been traded a short time afterwards. A similar scenario happened between the Leafs and Ducks a couple of years ago after Aaron Voros cleared waivers and the Leafs traded a conditional 7th for him a couple weeks later.

Other ideas would be NHL-ready or close to ready prospects such as Percy, Granberg, MacWilliam and Blacker for equivalent forward prospects. (ex. Percy for Rackell or Noesen, Blacker for DSP, MacWilliam or Granberg for Holland)

I don't think the Leafs are like you pointed out, in a position to move the likes of Rielly, Gardiner or Franson. Given the current make-up of the team. But, the Leafs do have a nice stable of defenseman prospects and young NHL depth and now Liles in the minors. Not all of them can play and it has become a little crowded. They could probably spare one to a team in need if a forward prospect with top-6 potential came back or a pick for some cheap depth.

So, I take it Fowler may be a tad bit overrated? After every passing year you expect his role to grow and for him to be a bigger player on the Ducks' blueline but seems too timid to be a game temp changing defenseman.

Well wtf do you expect? Most young D-men in this league are prospects, if you want a young (reliable) D-man your going to have to give up something to get them. I love how Dreger puts out a tweet about this and now all of a sudden Ducks fans are dictating what they want and for how much LOL

Sometimes you have to trade a player you don't want to if you want to fill a hole.

I would love to get one in a deal involving Nisky, but it'd prolly cost Des+.

First of all young D means established to me. Prospectwise we have enough. I doubt that one of Bonino, Palmeri and Etem gets traded.

Bonino is instrumental for the PP
Palmeri has signed a great contract for the Ducks
Etem is the future face for SoCal hockey

On the block for me are:
Sbisa - stopped progressing
Hiller - one of the goalies will go, Fasth is as good and Andersen + Gibson are pushing
Devante Smith-Pelly - needs a fresh start
Holland - has to make the next step, not sure if Anaheim is the place
The first rounders 2014

I also have Cam Fowler on my list if the returning player is good enough. I'd give up Fowler if for example Bogosian or McDonagh would come the other way. But then, this kind of trades do not happen. I think Cam also stopped to progress.
