LA Kings Win William M. Jennings Trophy!

Probably deserves its own thread at this point in time because there is still some confusion in regard to how this thing is computed.

I twitter-discussed this with Lisa Dillman last night who sent me a message this morning that Nick N. (guessing Nick Nixon) confirmed that the "shootout loss goal" (that imaginary goal scored when a team loses in a shootout) does INDEED count against a team in regard to the Jennings trophy (even though it does NOT count against a goalie's individual statistics nor does it count against a teams "goals against" statistics).

I can't find an authority anywhere that explains the reasoning behind this, or if its even correct. Do not know where Nixon gets his information but I am guessing that he must know the truth.

For what its worth, NHL.com has the goals for and against for each team that includes the mythical shootout loss goal. If you go to their statistics page, the goals against are somewhat less that do not include the myth. Links are below.

If anyone out there can actually find the authority, please link it here.

The following link shows Bruins 167 (80 games), Kings 165 (81 games).

Goals Against by Team

The following link shows Bruins 173 (80 games), Kings 170 (81 games).

League Standings

Boston hosts Buffalo on Saturday and visits New Jersey on Sunday.

The Kings host Anaheim on Saturday.

So shutout Anaheim and we are golden no matter what, not to mention it'd put a great capper on a great defensive season to shut out the Ducks and kill their bid for a Presidents Trophy.

I think one might show shootout loss goals and the other might not, but which is it. Jim and Bob have been really pushing this Jennings trophy the past couple games but no one but them seem to really care.

Funny I was doing some research myself about this today. And had always thought it was the team with the best GA/G. And it is not. It is the team with the least goals allowed.
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=674034

And as funny as it sounds there is a difference. As was pointed out the shootout goal for and against don't count into the equation for GA/G and G/G.
So where we stand is if we allow less than 3 goals against in the Anaheim game we win it. If we allow 3 goals we tie for it at worst. But Boston would have to shutout both teams in their games. Anymore than 3 goals we need help to win it.

As I wrote in the opening post, it appears that the Jennings is awarded on TOTAL goals allowed (including those mythical goals in shootout losses). Nick Nixon apparently endorses this idea.

As far as who cares? Well, I do. So make that three. Jim, Bob, and Ron.

I care as well. This franchise hasn't really had a successful, storied past prior to 2012. Nothing will touch winning multiple Cups, but trophies like this are nice compliments to turning this into a winning franchise for years to come.

God knows we'll never win the division as long as the January road trip is here

This is a team award and would be fantastic and well-deserved. I hope we stick it out.

Boston gave up a goal today, so does that mean the Kings can win the Jennings trophy if they give up 3 or less tonight?

BTW, of note the trophy is awarded to the goaltender(s) that play over 25 games for the respective teams in the season. So if the Kings win it it will go to Jonathan Quick making him the first solo winner of the award since Martin Brodeur in 09-10.

I think they will secure it if they only give up 2 goals or less. Hopefully no goals at all!

Hopefully Quick and the boys limit the Ducks to 2 goals or less but if something bizarre were to happen , we should get some help from the Devils tomorrow as they host the Bruins for their season finale.

Might be Marty's last game as a Devil and I think he'll want to go out on a high note, he'll be on his game.

True, but his game is pretty sad these days.

Kind of a bummer because both Jones and Scrivens had significant contributions to the overall effort.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as we keep the Ducks to 3 goals or less tonight, quick is guaranteed at least a share of the trophy, right?

especially considering what their performances ment with Quick out, and they both got really great results...

In kind of a ****ed up way though for Quick I am a bit happy to see him have both lines to himself. Looking back through the years the solo names stand out a bit more, and Quick has been... well... Quick for a while now... But yeah sucks for Jonesy and buttflop.

Devils scored. The LA Kings have won the trophy.
