I wasn't trying to insult people's intelligence, my point was what you may find a pompous windbag, I actually enjoy. His "off topic" stuff is almost always hockey related in some way.

Can't please everyone, I guess I'm lucky to be in the pleased category.

Yup pretty much. Brown used to be awesome. The KRavchuk goal, the Duchene goal . . . he was one of the best in the business back then.

The occasional anecdote, it was all good. Lately he just uses the same recycled jokes every game.

Disagree here. His stories have run over goals in the past for gods sake.

The tea and Christmas cards is as widespread in hockey as "top shelf where momma keeps the marzipan!" everyone uses those.

What I'm reading here is that some people don't like the banter, which is fine, turn it off. unfortunately I'm also reading a whole bunch of exaggerated accounts created to support upset listeners.

It's ok to not enjoy it, without making things up.

I have never heard a single other play by play guy use the scrum joke that Dean Brown uses.

I was actually watching to see if he would go off-topic but he was pretty committed to calling the game.

Potvin sounded a little inebriated though.

Who is Pagé?

He said it over and over again.

Like most media guys, Dean Brown just isn't as funny as he thinks he is. (Morning drive DJs are the worst offenders in this category.) I also agree wholeheartedly with the assessment that he is much better on the national broadcasts, when he knows he has to behave himself. When he tries to be a comedian and Mr. Cool on the regional broadcasts, it flops badly.

I find him pretty funny.

But I have a pretty lame sense of humour.

It's funny, I find him unbearable to watch. He just rambles on and on, which I believe is one of the reason's Brown has fallen off as the play-by-play guy. It's hard to keep it simple with Uncle Denis around.

I miss him and Gordie as a full time team.

I love Dean Brown, and hate Denis Potvin.

I respect the fact that Potvin is a hall of fame defenseman and has tons of knowledge and yada yada yada, but imo, he delivers it poorly and awkwardly whilst doing colour commentary. Get him on the panel in the intermission or something and give Dean a real colour commentator.

I grew up listening to Dean Brown, and I agree with some posters saying Potvin is part of the reason Dean sometimes gets off track. I find Denis gets off track way more often than Dean does, and it normally just ends in an awkward silence mid sentence.

IMO, Denis is the problem, not Dean.

He wasn't bad last night.

I did spend half the game listening to a feed with the LA guys though.

Brown was good last night must be reading HF...

Is there no one else they can find to do this. Other than Potvin? Honestly? ANYONE, I thought id get used to it especially going from Galley to him. But I cant take it anymore he is terrible. Best example ever of a situation where an ex player no matter how good he was is just not set out for this job.

This is unfortunately true.... However there in lies the problem if he is still this bad.

Dean Brown has the rambling style of a minor league baseball announcer. I'm not joking, that's literally the exact style of broadcasting he uses.

Long stories about short encounters, very little about what's actually going on on the ice.

I can't stand him on the radio or television, but he is especially terrible on the radio. I'll hop in the car, and I will literally have to wait until a goal is scored or the period ends to hear the score.

I remember one game a few years ago I hopped in the car after hockey practise, and the Leafs had just scored on the Sens. The game was back underway and off he went on a tangent with Gordo, with about 18:30 to go in the 2nd period.

I didn't find out until the end of the 2nd period that it was 3-1 Sens. Literally the entire period, with a few commercial breaks thrown in, and not a single score update.

Do they think people really listen to the entire game start-to-finish on the radio, or that no one starts listening during the game?

Sorry, but Dean Brown and Gord Wilson was one of the most painful tandems I've ever heard.

Gord was a complete homer, and Dean just let him go off on tangents while he was separately focused on his own tangents!

*rant over*

anyone else notice Uncle Dennis working to get DB back on track calling the game rather than story time?

its on the tip of my tongue/fingers but i cant quite place it.
Dean was rambling on about something, also implied that its not something they really needed to talk about or that it wasnt that interesting, then Uncle Dennis cut in, agreed and said:

"yeah, that and its a 3-2 hockey game"

brown's response? "exactly"
lol
errr....(whispers) "Dean he's talking to you"

Funny comment from my non hockey watching gf during the game last night, she asked me if it was normal for broadcasters to tell lengthy personal stories during the game....i told her in Ottawa it is!

last night i was laughing the entire first period. the crowd was bush league, both teams were bush league, the refs were bush league (i think, i have terrible memory but i think i remember the reffing off more than usual in the first period), and the commentary was bush league.
