What's sad for me is that Dean Brown was actually my favourite commentator as a kid. 10+ years ago, I thought he was pretty cool.

Now, I gotta agree with some people. He needs to focus more.
I also enjoy listening to other team's broadcasts when they play us.

To be fair to Dean, it's hard to see the game when you're on your knees the whole time.

its on the tip of my tongue/fingers but i cant quite place it.
Dean was rambling on about something, also implied that its not something they really needed to talk about or that it wasnt that interesting, then Uncle Dennis cut in, agreed and said:

"yeah, that and its a 3-2 hockey game"

brown's response? "exactly"
lol
errr....(whispers) "Dean he's talking to you"
I remember that too. I think he was rambling about Barry Manilow. It was him that brought it up and for some reason, kept coming back to it. Pretty sad when DUD (Drunk Uncle Denis) is the one that has to get the show back on track.

Seems to me that being a play-by-play guy is a pretty sweet gig.

Why he has dreams of humping it out on the comedy circuit is beyond me.

He thinks he's a lot more amusing and clever than he really is. He's one of those people that use 2 words when 1 would suffice. His insight is usually long winded common knowledge that he seems to think is divine perspicacity, which he in his infinite generosity rains down on us lesser minded folk.

Just listen to him whenever he is on the radio, he speaks down to everyone that isn't Dennis Potvin.

I can't stand Dean Brown.

When he's a guest on the drive I change the channel. It's insufferable.

meh, no complaints about him. He's the voice of the Sens and I hope it stays that way. Story time is nothing new.

And I miss Ian Mendes Not a fan of this filler guy, yet.

I liked his Barry Manilow segueways.

It's not even halfway through the season, and it's an away game against Florida.

Even I'm not particularly excited about what's going on.

I like a good chuckle. I can see what's going on in the game anyway.

At least he sounds interested in the game. I was driving for part of it and siriusxm used the panthers radio broadcast... I don't think I've heard a more disinterested pbp ever.

And that includes the NJ team that tells you what's going on in the game about once every three minutes (I've listened to games where there's been three faceoffs without them actually calling any play by play - not recently though, was when they had /have the female pbp broadcaster.)

I like Sean/Shawn McKenzie.

He has Bob's smirk.

Ian's endless blinking is better suited for the radio.

Is this serious, you guys are watching the game on tv, as in using your eyes. I dont want my anouncer to say names all game and call every single pass. I liek when they can go off and talk about something i didnt know about. I already know spezzas name is spezza and that he just made a 2 foot pass to macarthur. i enjoy that they can have a laugh every once and a while. And last nights game was beyond boring. if it was the radio okay totally different story i cant see the game so i want play by play and descriptions of whats going on.

This is how I feel... I was enjoying him dissing Manilow for no good reason... I watch the game, and enjoy the banter. I don't need a guy explaining to me what's happening, but I do like the back ground stories, and sometimes completely random stuff. Seem like the two are good friends and it enjoyable to listen to.

Just my opinion...

I hate the Sportsnet commentary. I wish there was an option to hear the game without commentary, because if I mute it, I don't get the sounds of the game.

90 percent of the time, it's like listening to an irrelevant podcast over top the hockey game. They don't even call the action, or build tension. When they tell stories, it feels like they are rarely trying to put over the actual Senators players (in order for the fans to build an emotional connection to the team they are watching) but instead are giving irrelevant anecdotes about a time they met Bobby Hull on an elevator or something.

There's also that really awkward moment, where they are telling an irrelevant story, laughing to themselves, and then realize something is actually happening in the game, but they aren't on top of it. So without knowing how to transition back into the game, they just awkwardly pause and don't say anything, and then resume their story after the play dissipates.

They are also the radio broadcast as well, so they do need to actually call the game.

It's not that people can't follow hockey without commentary.

A commentator's job on a regional broadcast is two things.

1) Enhance the emotion of the game with their words. The game should be more dramatic because of commentators, not less dramatic, which seems to be the case with these Sportsnet broadcasts.
2) Be a bit of a homer, and put over the team and it's players so that fans watching are more likely to continue to tune into the product.

It's pretty easy to know who is shooting the puck, and who is passing to who. What makes a game more fun when something dramatic happens? Some guy talking about some random off topic story about the time insert hockey legend here had poutine with him, or a commentator following the action, picking up his voice as the drama multiplies, and ultimately losing his **** when the home team does the impossible and scores a huge clutch goal?

When he does the actual PxP he's great, because he manages to get in a few quick and funny side remarks on non-calls by the refs or cheap shots by the opponent. And he has a great voice. And he's not rooting for the Leafs.

But when he rambles on it can get tiresome. I also find that the two tend to mumble a lot. I played back three times the story about Ziba's sense of humor and still couldn't make out the words. It's not just me: my gf listened to it too and couldn't decipher it either.

He also needs to remember not to repeat stories within a week of each other.

He told the whole I fell for the claim of minor league hockey in Iran storylast night as well as only a ggame or two before. Word for word even.
