The 2009 NHL Draft produced core pieces for the Colorado Avalanche

It is safe to say that the 2008-09 season was a season Colorado Avalanche fans would much rather forget. Not only did their 32-45-5 record leave them in last place in the Western Conference, but 27th overall in the NHL as well.

Armed with a total of seven picks in the draft, including two second round picks, the Avalanche would look to fill organizational needs at all positions. Luckily, the 27th place finish resulted with a third overall pick in the lottery, which the Avalanche used to select their current top line center, Matt Duchene. In addition to Duchene, three other drafted players have seen NHL action and six players still remain with the organization.… read more

I'll read this in a bit but wow on the 32-45-5 record...our record now is 31-12-5. Mind boggling.

I don't have time to read this right now but if it's another piece by Chau Vo i'm willing to bet it's a good one. He's done a great job lately with the Avalanche HF articles.

Great draft indeed. If you could bold the names on article It would be a bit nicer to read though. I'm gonna read it later.

We would have to win 1 and lose 33 in regulation to match that record. Things are looking a lot better now.

It is indeed and he has definitely stepped up the quality of Avs articles. As I'm sure he'll end up reading this and commenting (which is nice too, I like having an involved writer) I'd love to know how the next round of Avs prospect reviews will go. I'm not sure who does the ratings for the prospects or whatnot, but I believe just a year ago we had some excellent WTF rankings of prospects on there still.

Also, I love that it is finally 5 years from the 2009 draft and we can do a proper redraft soon enough. I'm looking forward to seeing how well we did in comparison to other clubs.

O'Reilly's definitely done something since he was drafted. From nubile teenager to full on bigfoot thing.

Ed - also the comments on that article are interesting

Thanks guys. I was looking forward to writing this article ever since the assignment was posted in November. Some of the ratings do need to be updated but between this and another monthly article I write I haven't had time.

Edit: And don't mind Franklin, he's just bitter because I'm not going to his bachelor party.

That season was the product of a terrible GM, a coach who wasn't that much better than Sacco (he was better but still bad) and Sakic's encounter with a certain snowblower.

Our top line was Smyth-Stastny-Tucker that season. And it was actually carrying the team for a short while.

Oh, and let's not forget the goaltending tandem of Budaj/Raycroft.

Stastny missed half the season.

Yes, but that was still a very mediocre top line.
