I'd be thrilled with Eichel. I know the prize of 2015 is McDavid, but Eichel is absolutely a fantastic 2nd option. The tank is good this year, hopefully we are in a similar situation next season as well. I would gladly take one more year of this too end up with either McDavid or Eichel.

Good night for the tank nation. Sabres lose and Panthers win... Hoping for
OT in the Oilers vs Flames game.

It's a good night but at this point it doesn't even matter. Florida, Calgary, Edmonton will all most likely finish bottom 5 and have the same chance to win the lottery whether they're 2 points or 32 points ahead of the Sabres.

Finishing last guarantees picking top 2. Good enough for me.

If 2015 is as good as everyone says it is and we lose the lottery but still get 2, ill be happy with Evgeni Malkin instead of an Alexander Ovechkin.

It sucks losing but drafting this early is extremely foreign to me. It actually is exciting, not winning the cup is not winning the cup, be it finishing last, getting bounced in the 1st round or losing in the ECF. Might as well get a top prize for always losing. I wouldn't mind doing this for 2 more years after this; 3 top 2 picks in a row with what we already got?! Why not.

Exactly. There is 2 winners each year in the NHL... One wins the Cup, one
wins the lottery. 2015 looks stacked top 5 with studs.

Sabres have had a pretty good 2 weeks or so as far as teams winning games and the Islanders losing. If New Jersey would stop winning games we'd be set.

They must forfeit their 1st rounder. The main reason we want them to lose is because if they win the lottery we will retain #1 overall. So our odds of winning the lottery is 25%+ whatever % Nj has of winning it. And also Technically, we will have 2 "1st rounders" no matter what, as if we finish last even with losing the lottery we would pick #2 and then #30 overall with our 2nd rounder. If the Devils finish behind the Isles and they decide to give up their first then it would just mean a higher pick. Say NJ finishes bottom 10 and NYI finishes 11th, they are technically giving up the 10th overall pick and would be unable to defer.

We don't have to worry about them winning the lottery. So the higher they are in the lottery the better chances we have to retain 1st.

I'm very skeptical about this last part, where NYI finish 11th worst, NJD finish 10th worst, but NJD forfeit their pick, so the Isles pick is 10th, but the Isles can't defer because they technically finished 11th.

Do you have a source suggesting the Isles wouldn't be able to defer, or are you speculating?

I'm fairly certain what Layne said is accurate. Reading the Devils' board earlier this season--and I'll look for the thread--they were saying that their pick still exists and their logo will be on the draft board, but they'll simply be skipped when their pick is up and no player name will go opposite their name and logo. The first pick of the 2nd round will still be #31 overall for recording purposes, etc.

Put simply, under your scenario, the Devils have the 10th overall pick and it is forfeited. The Isles than cannot defer the 11th overall pick, though they'd be picking the 10th player eligible for the draft.

In any event, this is likely an academic discussion. I don't see the Islanders catching and surpassing the Devils. The Islanders still haven't hit rock bottom.

NJ isn't removed from the draft, the pick is announced as forfeit and the Islanders are placed on the clock at the 11th spot. Just like if they won lottery they would be put at the 1 spot but wouldn't be allowed to make a selection. That's how my understanding of the situation views it.

In that case, they'd have their second at pick #30, right? Or would rounds 2-7 play out according to season rankings?

The first ever #2 overall draft pick that was the first player to go off the board.

Nope that comes after they defer the pick to 2015, feeling they will be better, and that pick ends up sending McDavid to Buffalo. Then they will officially be at rock bottom.

If every other team accumulates points at their current pace, the Sabres would need 58 pts to not be guaranteed one of the top two picks in the 2014 NHL Draft. That means they'd have earn 44 pts in their next 52 games, so a record that looks something like 20-28-4 the rest of the way. Does anyone think this club has 20 more wins in them this season?

Me neither.

I'm rooting for the Isles to win the lottery, so they almost have to defer.
