there sure is some bad ice. at some point the league should establish some kind of standard. I realise that it's probably expensive but this is 2014 for god sakes. would make the game better (sucks watching a game with the puck bouncing all over the place) and probably go a long way in helping to lessen injuries too.

@JohnForslund: By the looks of the morning skate it appears J. Staal with have new linemates. He skated with Skinner and Lindholm.

Well, that's interesting. Wonder what happens to that line's zone starts.

IMO, right now I'd try:

Tlusty // Staal // Semin
Gerbe // Jordan // Nash
Skinner // Ruutu // Lindholm
Dvorak // Malhotra // Dwyer

Nash just doesn't look like a center at this level, but he isn't totally useless.

I said this in the trade thread, but will repeat here. I'd be more inclined to try Malhotra as the 3C..as he is third best true center on the team.

Tlusty-Staal-Semin
Gerbe-Jordan-Dwyer
Skinner-Malhotra-Lindholm
Ruutu-Nash-Dvorak.

-or- if Muller wants Skinner and Lindholm with Jordan

Tlusty-staal-Semin
Skinner-Staal-Lindholm
Gerbe-Malhotra-Ruutu/Dwyer
Ruutu/Dwyer-Nash-Dvorak

Or something like that.

Hoping to see something like the second lineup tonight, BBA. Since we don't have a good 3rd scoring line might as well have a defensively responsible 3rd line that can score as well. Then plug in grinders for the 4th.

Our 4th line winger worth 4.75 M at year. Yeah, it's not bad.

His salary is irrelevant at this point in the season because it's a sunk cost. The salient point is to put the guys that are currently on the roster in the best positions to succeed as a team.

In the offseason it's a different story.

I wouldn't mind this lineup, see how offensive Jordan can actually be. I'll get castrated for it here, but I still like Skinner/Ruutu together, maybe with Lindholm on the 3rd. Stick with the SML 2nd and extra pieces on the 4th.

So how ****ed is the schedule if this game ends up getting postponed too? I don't think it will but my friend in Philly seems to think there is a chance if things get bad.

I would correct this statement to "losses in hand" if I were you.

So according to Cory Lav on twitter Dennis Potvin made some remarks about Ron Francis not being able to handle being the go to guy in Hartford in Carolina on NHL radio. Any chance some of you folks going to the game Saturday can start a "Potvin Sucks" chant? Maybe bus in a few groups of Rangers fans to help?

Edit: I should probably mention his current gig is with Ottawa TV.

Wasn't Potvin the Panthers' play-by-play or color guy when that whole diving thing went down? He seems to have some problem with this franchise.

Correct on all accounts. Maybe he's still pissed off the Pens traded for Francis to do the job they hoped his buddy Trottier could still do?

I don't get it. Is he saying Francis couldn't handle being the franchise player?

Followup question: is he serious?

That's how it was framed on twitter by Cory. I didn't hear it myself so I don't really know.

So how long before teams stop trading defensemen to the Hurricanes?

Corvo scored a hat trick in his first game against Ottawa.

Liles scored a goal against the Leafs.

Now Sekera had three points in his first game against Buffalo...

I am a frequent critic of Eric Staal, and I'm still unhappy about the way that he approached the beginning of the season, but credit where credit is due: his overall game has ratcheted up a notch. He is very nearly in beast mode...or what I like to call "Staal is acting like he cares again" mode. I just wish he saw that the team goes as he goes as more of a catalyst to his level of effort.

It seems the idea of turning the 3rd line into a checking line for away games is a good one. When you're at home and can match lines, that's when I think it makes more sense to make your 3rd line an offensively-slanted one. It is helpful that Gerbe seems to be able to play on that line regardless of its focus, but Skinner cannot be on the second line when it is the checking line, so either they make Tlusty the LW that shifts to the 2nd line for home games or Gerbe would always be the LW that plays a defensively-focused game. It's an interesting strategy and decent discussion material, anyway. Discuss!

No, no, no. If this season has taught us anything, it's that every uptick in play is the result of advanced stats balancing out and every downtick in play is the result of bad luck and injury. Unless you're the designated scapegoat of this board, then every uptick in play is ignored and every downtick in play is because you suck.

Therefore, no one on the team deserves any credit/blame for anything they do, good or bad.

Yeah seriously. Not sure what Potvin's deal is aside from being bitter about being washed up in his post-playing career, being bitter about the whole diving thing from years back, and being worse then Tripp Tracy in what they both do if he's suggesting that Francis couldn't handle being a franchise player.

If he's suggesting that Francis isn't the type of guy to be a good GM here then that could be argued.

Well there was some criticism of Francis around the time preceding the trade. Francis was considered a heart and soul player, but not necessarily an elite offensive guy. He took some heat for being shut down by Guy Carboneau in the playoffs, if memory serves. You have to put things in context, being a ppg back then was expected of every teams top player and Francis was always at his best as a complimentary center with good scoring wingers. He wasn't at the same level pts wise as the best of the best when in Hartford. He was more playmaker than scorer, not particularly fast or hard shooting. His pts rose with the quality of his linemates as he moved to Pitts though he did have good seasons in Hartford. He became the best number two center in the league behind Mario, and became appreciated for his ability to step up to being number one when Mario was out. He's who he is for being able to be consistent for so long. Potvin was of that time to some extent so his memories of Francis are likely influenced by having been around during the Hartford days. I don't know the context of the remarks so it's hard to say.

Ronnie was everything to whaler fans, but much like the team itself he didn't get the credit/respect around the league for being elite there. He was the top scorer but wasn't considered good enough to lead them to the playoffs on his own, which is of course unfair but how people looked at stars back then.

Checking the stats he only had a couple of crazy point seasons even with Pitts so his pts didn't go up THAT much in Pitts. Found that interesting.

Well, he did start off the statement with "yeah", so I think he is playing along in the sarcasm game.
