Fox/Spector FA & Trade rumors

Recent reports out of Vancouver have Canucks general manager Dave Nonis intent on retaining team captain Markus Naslund and linemate Todd Bertuzzi.
Naslund, an unrestricted free agent, has hinted at retirement, while his agent refuses to speculate on what his client's future plans will be.

As for Bertuzzi, there's been speculation that he wants out of Vancouver, due in part of the fallout of his ugly attack on Steve Moore in March 2004 and a supposed rift between himself and head coach Marc Crawford.

Nonis recently rejected the notion of Bertuzzi demanding a trade, claiming he's been in contact with the big forward in recent weeks and at no time did he request to be dealt.

However, if Nonis can convince Bertuzzi's linemate Naslund to return that will set the trade whispers about the big guy to rest.

Meanwhile, there's some talk that former Canucks and current Anaheim Mighty Ducks GM Brian Burke might also be interested in signing Naslund. Thus far there's no word out of the Naslund camp regarding this possibility.

on the Ducks board, they seem to have some rumours floating around (apparently from who they feel are credible sources), that Naslund has already been in talks with Anahiem, and a deal is all but done there, and should be signed after the new CBA is out.

Been trying to figure this out, and it makes no sense to me, given what we hear from Vancouver media, and media sources like this one above - and what we know about Naslund and his character. Would he really do something like that? Where he's already got a deal in place with another team, and his current team and GM has no clue about it?

doesn't really seem like a Naslund-type move

Isn't it illegal for teams to contact players right now with no CBA actually signed and it being a complete done deal...that was myunderstanding.

yes.. I'd guess so... especially for players that weren't UFA in July 2004 (like Kariya, Murray, Palffy, etc who have been UFAs for a while).

But it's not like this type of stuff doesn't happen. How many times have we seen players sign a deal on July 1st - first day of FA? Do you think that teams have given these multiyear, multimillion dollar deals within hours of talking to a player and his agent... and have all this already worked out and ready to sign the first day that FA begins?

I'm sure players (through agents) and teams, do talk. Of course it's more than likely going to be off the record.

With Burke and Naslund - I'm sure that Naslund has spoken to Burke since he got his job in Anahiem... maybe a congrats and good luck with the Ducks, and Burke responding with a very quiet, "you know we'd be interested in having you in Anahiem."

I don't doubt that such practices are a common thing in the NHL.
