If Andrei Markov doesn't comeback......

Then our priority will be to sign a top notch d, a pp specialist like Aucoin over a star winger like Kovy or etc...

I'm confident, Markov will comeback (since he knows there'll be some NHL hockey this fall), he isn't the first russian who said he isn't coming back because he already signed with a team , in the RSL.

No were not, hes just one player not a team, not a group of players. If we're "royally" screwed without Markov then we have the weakest team in the league. Markov barely played up to his potential his last NHL year, Julien didnt seem to think he was that vital to the team either.

we're not screwed at all without Markov lol... He was a role player last year, nothing more. He looked totally expendable. I like his upside however. He's going to stay anyways and he'll be good for many years.

Expendable, are you kidding? Aside from the diving Markov has the potential to pretty much do it all. He's not afraid of the rough stuff, even gets a little dirty when he needs to. His offensive potential although not in the superstar range, is still pretty big. I don't see how you can think he's marginal.

You know how much Markov pissed off Thornton? Markov is GREAT and "expandable" is sooooo ridiculous

Markov was THE Canadien's dmn in the series.... didnt put up stellar offensive play, but was VERY solid all around.

Markov is one of the best puckmover defensemans in the league, if we lose him, we have to sign another elite puckmover cause Brisebois and Bouillon certainly wont be enough.

Streit looks like an interesting alternative but I surely wouldnt be very confortable without any proven NHLer to replace Markov... Hainsey sucked in the AHL last season so...

He looked very, very, VERY good with Komisarek at the end of last season. He even looked better defensively and didn't look so mad when I flashed a cam in his face [I need pictures of players for every game dammit ]!

Who thinks there's a chance Hainsey may be paired with Komisarek sometime next season? Hainsey seems fit for the 3rd pairing as of now, and Komo looks like a 2nd [maybe 1st by the end of the season?] pairing dman, so I'm not too sure.

I finally agree with Komi8, Markov is our best rushing dman and he's certainly not expendable. With Souray and Markov, it's Hainsey or Bouillon on the left side on the 3rd pair D.

Without Markov, that leaves us a little thin back there...

He'll come back. He has to!

He never said he was expendable, he said he looked expendable, two different things. One meaning we dont need him, the other hinting at the fact he didnt play like he could the last year(he actually played badly and was relegated to the third pairing) and we made the playoffs easily even without him or the help of Kovalev(thats a little jab from my part).

Hes a great talent, but we can live without him if we have too, if not, then were a terrible team.

Not until he can play consistently. I would agreed two years ago when he was simply amazing, but after signing his little contract and playing very inconsistently it changed my mind a bit. I'm still very optomistic and I think he'll take over the number 1 role next year without question, but I wont speculate on his rankings until he proves himself in the NHL.

Best defensemen in Russia though .

Markov would be a big loss, but a much bigger loss if he can't be replaced. I personally get the feeling he will come back, but if he doesn't, look at our pairings without signing a UFA.....

Souray, Rivet
Cube, Komo
Hainsey, Breezy
or

Souray, Breezy
Cube, Komo
Hainsey, Rivet.

Sorry to say, but im not liking that one bit.......

I do
I don't think you are out all that much trying them together. They have played together a couple seasons in the minors now so you might as well try it. I would go with
Brisebois Souray
Markov Rivet
Hainsey Komisarek

this is assuming the make no moves on the backend

I think Markov will be back but if not Breezy may have to kept around or sign another puck-moving D.

If Markov has truly signed a deal with that Russian team, then someone should inform the media here because I haven't seen one line confirming and talking about it this week in the many Habs off-season previews. Then you have Pat Hickey who about 2 months ago when that rumor came out wrote in his column in the Gazette that it was nothing but a rumor and that Markov was waiting to see what was going to happen with the CBA.

Then you go to Red Wings site and they all have Datsyuk in their lineup and threads like this say the contract was just an option in case of no season in 05-06:

http://www.letsgowings.com/forums/in...howtopic=27778

Hopefully it's the same situation with Markov.

edit: found this link saying it was all bogus in Datsyuk's case that he couldn't come back...

You haven't seen it cause there is none. The latest info I've seen is from the Dynamo's head coach's interview in which he commented on the status of his NHL players. Mr.Krikunov clearly stated that both Markov and Afinogenov ARE going back to their respective NHL teams, and the only NHL player that might stay with Dynamo this season is Pavel Datsyuk(Personally, I could hardly imagine that scenario). And that is very consistent with what Markov himself said a few weeks ago about wanting to play in Montreal this season. I think it is about time to put to rest all these Markov not caming back rumors. Source: metallurg.ru (In Russian)

Hopefully he's back with a little less diving and a little more grit and toughness.(I wasn't impressed when he flopped on the ice after being glove-punched by Thornton in last year's playoffs). Other than that he's a keeper.

I dont think Julien will paire 2 young unexperimenty Dmens together.. Especially considering Hainsey still has alot to do in the goal to become an effective defenseman in the NHL and that Komisarek is still progressing... To be a good and reliable defenseman in the NHL is tougher\longer than make your place as foward.
