"Oct. 17. This is a juicy one. Buzz is growing that the last-place team in the West, the Edmonton Oilers, and the second-last-place club in the East, the Buffalo Sabres, are talking trade -- and it could be a monster. With Buffalo GM Darcy Regier's job on the line and his greatest stars, Thomas Vanek and Ryan Miller, both playing out contract years, a deal to send Vanek and Miller to Edmonton in exchange for a package that would include former No. 1 draft pick Nail Yakupov (twice a healthy scratch this season) has been rumoured.
It's no secret that all three players have been shopped and that the Oilers (league-high 32 goals against) are looking for help in goal, but pulling off a deal of this magnitude this early in season would be a shocker. Consider that the Oilers would be swapping a blue-chip (albeit unproven) forward for a pair of older guys on expiring contracts, and it doesn't make sense from Craig MacTavish's perspective. Further, a move like this would do nothing to help the Oilers' blue line"

Better come with extensions. Vanek should be thank full to the Oilers. He made a a lot of money from their offer sheet!

Not sure how we can afford both, that's almost 13.5M in cap. One of the pieces going back would need to be Hemsky (5.0M) I would think, and probably Dubnyk (3.5). That's not even considering what Buffalo would actually want. Unless they are talking Eberle here, the cap makes no sense. And if they're talking Eberle, I want more than a couple of UFA's. Extensions need to be involved. I don't see how this realistically can work.

And what cash dumps would be going with Yak to make the salary work?

Salary needs to be retained or head back from Edmonton's way.

To EDM
Miller(50% paid by Buf) w/extension
Vanek(50% paid by Buf)

To Buffalo
Nick Schultz/Ales Hemsky
Nail Yakupov
1st Round Pick

That works cap-wise.

I don't see it happening, as I don't see Vanek + Miller both agreeing to extensions beforehand.

I can see Miller ending up in Edmonton for a smaller package though.

I don't see Buffalo eating 50% of the salary of Vanek and Miller either, is that even allowed now that the season has begun?

Seems like good trading partners. Yak is young and Buffalo needs to rebuild. Edmonton needs to perform now and get a top 10 goalie imo and a solid scoring threat. Would Miller waive his NTC to go to Edmonton is the question.

I honestly think Miller is the only one who NEEDS an extension beforehand. They'd roll the dice on Vanek.

Yak and a first for UFA's? Nope. Yak, Dubnyk, Hemsky for Miller, Vanek +. That's 4 of 5 pieces being UFA's, and the 1 piece locked up long term is a recent first overall pick with a lot of value. This looks like it would need to be way too big of a deal to work. Maybe for one or the other, but I don't see how both can work.

I like the idea of this deal. Then I like the idea of Vanek to the Kings as a UFA in the off season. Vanek would make the Kings top six complete.

Well this rumor is about as lop-sided salary-wise as you can possibly get.

Oilers fans: Begin the process of writing off the futures of the players that Edmonton gives up.

Sabres fans: Begin the process of bathing in the potential of the players that Buffalo receives.

Why do the Oilers need Vanek?

Can't see it happening without an extension. Yakupov is worth way more than an unsigned Miller. If he was signed, that's another story.

That's not worth Yakupov. Goalies, even signed ones don't bring that kind of return. I don't see what the motivation is for Ryan Miller to sign an extension now either.

Long term wise too, Miller + Vanek presumably both at $6.5 million a piece for the Oilers doesn't really work.

I'll believe it when I see it.

They seem to be good partners though. Edmonton has the young pieces and Buffalo can eat a lot of cap be it in retained salary or cap dumps. No interest in Dubnyk though. We'd run with Enroth and Hackett for the year.
