Garrioch: New Owner Wants House Cleaning

In today's article in the Ottawa Sun, Garrioch reports that the Panthers new ownership is looking to off load a number of vets while continuing to rebuild with youth. Although Garrioch is not the most reliable of sources, it makes sense that Viola wants to put his stamp on the team while continuing the youth movement.

That said, I doubt that many teams are interested in our overpaid, declining players, such as Jovo and Upshall, who must be regarded as waiver candidates at this point.

I would not be surprised if the Panthers are active at the trade deadline.

If he wants to see them cleaned out. He's gonna have to pay a lot buyouts because almost none of our guys are movable. I see Goc, Kopecky, Fleishmann movable the rest.. eh..

Well Weaver is definitely moveable too, Versteeg is movable if he continues to produce, Gomez is definitely movable.

Also, if we are out of the race and Thomas is playing well & is healthy, I'm sure he can be moved as well.

Attempt to trade/waive: Gomez, Gilbert, Weaver, Jovanovski, Versteeg, Whitney, Upshall and Winchester.

Recall/give meaningful playing time to: Bjugstad, Robak, Trochek, Petrovic and Howden.

And if this is indeed true, I'd like Tallon to get more physical. Definitely need to take the body more and finish checks. Wear down the opposition.

This is worrisome. I cant fathom that this is a true report, why would Ottawa get this article and not GR?

I can understand that. I just hope that he doesn't go overboard and start thinking that he can make all the on ice decisions.

To me, it's only worrisome if they don't intend to go out and spend money in FA. I don't have an issue with getting rid of older, mediocre players as long as they go and target some younger, talented FAs in the offseason.

Then again, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing to be bad again next year with Connor McDavid potentially coming as a result (half-joking).

Meh. A trade to shake things up wouldn't be much of a surprise. Cleaning house wouldn't be a surprise either. Pretty pointless article.

We can't move guy like Versteeg and Upshall unless we take back bad money too. Of course we'll move whatever vets we can at the trade deadline when we're out of it.

shoot why not. I'm down with it. Give these kids a chance and get at least if it's 1 legit 1st liner for all of Gomez, Gilbert, Weaver, Jovo, Steeg fkit

Though I agree with the idea of moving the dead-weight...I thought ownership was going to be "hands-off" in regards to hockey operation? If Garrioch is to be believed, is this concept already out of the window?

I'd be wary since it is a Garrioch piece and he doesn't site and quotes or sources, but the team would be crazy to not want to try and move certain guys, but the idea of "cleaning house" I think is taking it a bit too far.

Ehhh... as much as I think the team is so-so, do we really want to blow it up?

Trading Winchester is pointless. What will you get for him? A 6th? He's an ideal 4th liner and he's done a good job. I'd be looking to re-sign him.

I think that's what he wants. I would love to see him bring in some PF's.

Well, we are 3-6. If we don't turn things around in the next few weeks, it's over for us. I don't blame Viola for not wanting to pay for all these contracts at that point. Whether it's in November or at the trade deadline when we start to unload guys, it makes no difference. It's no unheard of for an owner to give a directive to hold a firesale. Like 24-7 said, as long as Viola gives Tallon the money to go out and remake the team next summer, I'm fine with it. I don't like all these soft players anyway.

Like I said, as long as we replace those guys in free agency, why not? Unless we have a miracle turnaround in the next couple weeks.

i don't think we need a firesale similiar to the one a few years back, we need serious assets that's viable right now

No one wants our players. We're gonna get ripped off if we deal right now. But, at this point, we're all used to getting ripped apart in trades.

I dont see how we can get ripped off unless we trade a player that's under 25. All the others are not worth more than picks/prospects

You mean like the year we collected all those 3rd rounders and unknown prospects?

I think it would be half and half. Contenders are going to want to deal picks+prospects though.

Considering the source, I take it with a grain if salt, but...

If ownership wants a firesale two weeks into the season after consecutive bottom of the league finishes, then season ticket holders want a refund.

If they want to save money, fine. I get that.

Give me my cut.

Don't give me more bonus tickets to games you intend to lose.
Don't give me meet and greets with fourth line grinders.

Give me something that means you appreciate the fact that we continue to support this team through trying times.
