Beautiful stat line right there, though his game is so much more than points and plus minus.

That being said, for this team to keep competing like they are night and night out, he needs to keep producing offensively.

So when was the last time someone scored while he was on the ice at even strength? Unless it happened in the last three games isn't it like an 11 game streak?

Florida game. Gubranson scored on the point shot, Couts was covering the other d-man. Only time in the last 12 games he was on for an ES goal...+9 during those 12 games.

How about the "top 2 lines", who get much easier minutes step the **** up. Couts shouldn't have to do this every game. The amount of 5 on 5 pressure the top lines have produced over the last 4 games has been terrible. They are capable of much better and should be embarrassed.

I just can't say enough about Couturier. He's getting better and better every game. If he can play like this consistently, we have a real special player on our hands.

Couturier's two-way dominance is starting to flash. He's going to prove himself irreplaceable soon enough.

Couturier has been fantastic and the Flyers best player over the past two weeks, sorry Mason. One thing I would like to know is, what is Couturier's ceiling? Couturier gets better from game to game, he is truly exciting to watch.

Couturier is definitely a beast, but Mason is this team's MVP if you ask me. Couturier is playing 19 or so dominant minutes per game, while Mason has to play 60 and cover for Hartnell's 17, Simmonds's 16, and 30.8 shots per game (good for 21st in the NHL). That's not even mentioning the games where Mezsaros or Gill play.... or the egregious Streit turnover.

Anyhow, back to Couturier. Couple observations: First, skating is improved significantly. Second, wowza for that FO%... 43% last year, 50.4% this year. That's a huge turnaround over a short time. Third, anticipation is growing... he steps through on passes with regularity and has turned into a weapon going the other way. Finally, the 3 on 1 corner tie up is almost patented right now. How he manages to tie up a puck in a corner for so long by himself is impressive to watch.

If he can get that shot % back to a more respectable 8-10%, the points will come at an even better rate. Would really help him to finish a few more of the breakaways that his defensive prowess awards him.

For me the big difference seems to be confidence. His skillset doesn't look notably more developed to me-- His hands are still pretty stiff with the puck, his speed got a tad better while his acceleration is still average at best-- with a marked improvement in the dot. His defensive acumen was there from the day he came into the league. Berube has given him his personal vote of confidence and credit for the game he's always brought (Lavi simply did not use the kid well in his system) and Cooters absolutely flourishing underneath it. His extra step, extra fight on the boards, extra second(s) of patience when carrying the puck obviously has to do with his physical development but far moreso due to believing in himself. Lavi never gave him that gift. The kid looks like a pure cerebral being out there so if he can keep carrying this confidence forward I don't see the improvement slowing down as he starts to actually develop his game on the other side of the puck.

Keep stoking that fire in your eyes Coots!

I've said in the past that Couturier was going to be so important that he was going to cause Giroux to be moved back to the wing. We're seeing the evolution of Sean Couturier from "3rd line center" (and I use that quote loosely) to "1st line center" (a legitimate Ron Francis type who can play in all three zones). How anyone cannot like Couturier's game is beyond me.

in an interview he said when he was in QMJHL he had to play in the 3rd,4th line and learn defensive duties during the first 2years and then offense started to come, it's happening again.
i see a pattern

I'd like to see this at some point. Couts' ability to control the puck along the boards and then get open could compliment Giroux's game really well.

I'd like to see the kid get some more PP time, personally. I think he could do everything Hartnell does on that first PP unit just fine. Or even down low around the goal line - he has the hands to roof it while he's in tight.

Time for a crazy shake-up.

Giroux Couts. Simmonds
Hartnell Schenn Voracek

I don't see a reason to shuffle the lines right now--at least not the Downie-Coots-Read line. Who cares if it is technically our 3rd line--Couturier is getting a ton of minutes and has solid linemates. If you stick Couturier with Giroux, then you're either giving up the match-up game, or forcing Giroux to play against the other team's top-line.

He put up 96 points in his second year of juniors, that's pretty hard to do when getting bottom 6 minutes.
