They weren't really 'best-on-best' if some of the country/team's best players were missing...

So, in that case, there basically never was 'best-on-best' in hockey? I'm sure that nearly always one can find at least one great player missing... Hull and Orr in 1972, MPK & Yakushev & Shadrin, Nedomansky, Park & Dryden in 1976, Fetisov & Maltsev in 1979, Fetisov in 1984...

Certainly don't mind. Heh, they had to select two players per team in the Moscow games in 1972? It only now occurred to me... in that case, I can almost accept the choice of Mikhailov (along with Yakushev) in game 7.

As for the Challenge Cup, the Soviet game MVPs were (just going by my memory):

Game 1: Vladimir Golikov
Game 2: Valeri Vasiliev
Game 3: Vladimir Myshkin

The tournament MVPs were Boris Mikhailov for USSR and Clark Gillies for the NHL All-Stars.

I don't put too much stock in these player of the game awards. Like who picked them in 76? Was it Eagleson? Most of the Canadian selections seem to be his clients. Orr (3X) and Gainey for sure. Not sure about Martin & Vachon. Now Orr was great but so were Hull & Potvin but they got no recognition. Also wasn't Sittler(another Eagleson client) picked as AS LW of the tournament. Now I thought he played centre. I know he scored the winning goal in the final game but really better than Hull?

If there's a glaring omission it's Phil Esposito for Game 8. You'd think 2 goals and 2 assists, 3 of those points in the third, including the primary assist on the game-winning goal, would be enough for him to be named one of the top 2 Canadians ...
