Marleau grew up in a very small farming community in Sasketchewan.... Hard to imagine he comes from much wealth, but you never know.

I understand what you're saying, but still, there really aren't any true "upper class" kids who end up in pro hockey. It's much more common to see highly motivated lower class kids who somehow manage to scrape it all together.

Young Chester Clayton III from a family of lawyers is going to play water polo or something ... there is no compelling reason for him to wake up at 5am and tangle with a bunch of goons to play hockey.

its crazy how Stewart,Metropolit etc could make it.

It's probably alot harder now. The rink prices in Toronto/hockey registration must be absurd now compared to the late 90s and early 2000s. So inspiring to hear stories of these guys making it when you know how hard it is to even get to play the game here. You have to live everyday at outdoor rinks which is less then stellar conditions for developing as a kid.

Aneroid. He was birthed in Swift Current, because that is where the nearest hospital is.

Separately, Brian Boyle is one of 13 brothers and sisters - all born to the same two parents. The oldest sibling is 23 years older than the youngest.

This is actually amazing. Much respect to the Stewarts.

James Reimer...I am not sure if his family had financial problems but I do remember him saying that he is very fortunate to make 600K by playing hockey when there are doctors, engineers etc who do a lot more and aren't paid as much. He felt like he didn't deserve the money.

Quote:
"I'm getting the minimum here (US$555,000) and it's 10 times more than I got down (in the AHL)," Reimer said Tuesday before making his fourth straight start against the New York Islanders. "It's a lot bigger. It's weird. It feels like you don't deserve it sometimes -- what am I doing to deserve this?

"There are many people that work a lot harder than I do who don't get paid half as much."

Jeff skinner's parents are both lawyers and so is at least one of his sisters.

Del zotto's parents are wealthy.

Cody hodgson's dad was an MP.

Morgan Reilly's dad is well off from his company.

Hockey is extremely expensive, especially if you're in a big city.

I'd say a lot of the players from Toronto, for example, are at worst upper middle class.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had to skip a year of minor hockey because his family could not afford it.

Marc-Andre Fleury - son of a carpenter. The house in which Fleury grew up was built by his father's hands, as were half of the houses on the street where he grew up. Then he cut his junior hockey teeth with a team few wanted to play for in the Q...the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.

Boone Jenner

Not sure of his family's financial situation but from the quote you can extrapolate. Boone gained his work ethic on the farm helping out his family.

Matt Jenner used to remind his three sons that youth hockey players in greater Toronto — the ones “being dropped off at the rinks in their parents’ Mercedes” — don’t move 700-pound hay bales in the summer heat. His youngest son carries that farm-boy-strong attitude into every corner.

Teemu Selanne's older brother had drug problems and was in jail in the (early?) 1990s. According to himself he smuggled money to the prison so that his brother could pay debts.

This is what I was going to say. Nuge's family struggled economically as he was growing up. It's amazing to think he's now making 6 Million a year. Just more reason to like the guy.

Apparently was dirt poor. Buddy of mine tells a story of the first time he played against Marleau growing up. They see this kid wearing like 20yr old, hand-me-down equipment and are laughing about who this joker could be. Goes on to torch them for 6 or 7 goals haha.

I've heard he's a bit of an ******* - acting really arrogant. That is coming from friends who have met him. Heard good things about Hall and Eberle though. So at least 2/3 are good.

I love these threads about past kids facing adversity and going through it, until reading about the parents and how majority of them (especially the Dads) are low life bums. I understand that Stewarts' dad loved them, but seriously, couldn't you get a full time job? Even at McDonald's, Tim Horton's, Subway?

I think Trevor Daley grew up in the projects in Toronto.

Donald Brashear wins this I think. Well I guess it's not winning if you read his story.

I think Tim Thomas came from fairly humble beginnings, especially coming from Flint.

I believe PK Subban grew up in Rexdale and his father is a school principal in Toronto's Jane and Finch neighbourhood. Correct me if I'm wrong, but those aren't exactly great places to grow up in.

Wanted to post this one, but yeah Byfuglien was pretty poor growing up, IIRC he lived in a trailer with only his mom growing up and would often go to his grandma's for meals. I remember CBC doing a segment on it.

And damn, that piece on the Stewart bros is quite moving
