Why is a guy named Frans Nielsen outscoring John Tavares?

I just saw that a guy named Frans Nielsen is outscoring John Tavares on the New York Islanders. Who is this guy? And why is he outscoring John Tavares? Can somebody who watches the Islanders regularly tell me that. I mean John Tavares is supposed to be one of the best players in the world and the best on the Islanders roster by far...

tavares has tried to model himself as a tyler bozak type center (elite defence/faceoffs while the wingers produce the points). also, its still very early in the season

Teams put out their A-team in terms of defense against Tavares so Nielsen gets easier defensive matchups

but if Tavares is as good as some here claim (top5 player), he should easily outscore their 2nd line center or where ever Nielsen plays? All the true elite players all face best of the opponents defense and they still produce better than the rest of the team atleast the ones that don't play in the same line.
IE: Crosby, Ovie, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Stamkos, St.Louis...

although it is early in the season and Tavares most likely passes Nielsen some time soon.

Yeah, and the #3 player in the NHL is 91st in scoring too. It's 12% of the season.

Nielsen is carrying the Islanders, if they make playoffs it's only because of Nielsen. He is as good as Crosby.

Yeah Tavares is so awful, scoring 12 points in 10 games and whatnot...

Glassbangers at it again with a quality post.

Anyway. Here's two reasons:

1) Sample size.
2) Nielsen is a good player.

I couldn't have said it any better myself, but if you take his two-way game into consideration, it's really Nielsen > Crosby.

What it comes down to is that Nielsen dominates the playoff dot more than Tavares, thus he's able to put up more points and just be better all around in general. The playoff dot really is an underrated part of hockey.

Nielsen has been fantastic for many years now. Right now he's riding a hot streak with a ridiculous shooting percentage though.

Because teams are keying on Tavares and on his line, and that leaves Nielsen the space and the matchups to be able to do that.

You need two legitimate scoring lines. I watched Sundin throughout his career and it was the same problem. If the Leafs would have had a second line, they probably would have won at least one Cup. But night in and night out, Sundin was carrying usually two defenders/forwards on his back every single game.

You need a second line so that if they want to try to shut down Crosby's line, well then, you're going to have to deal with Malkin.

And yes, others are right; this is a very small sample size.

But for the Isles sake, 1. I hope Stromme pans out and 2. He's going to provide (hopefully) that second scoring line that will free up space for Tavares.

Oh, and get some goaltending too. That's going to help. Then the Isles will be a good team, or maybe even a Cup winner. But there are still pieces that need to be put in place before that happens.

It's not about Tavares points; I bet you he wouldn't care a bit it they were winning. I bet you he doesn't even now because hockey players want to win more than anything and not just collect points and trophies.

Grabner and Bailey, then they moved Grabner up to the first line until he got suspended.

It's been Bailey and PMB(he's not good).

He's on the 1st PP line.

We know you don't even watch the Isles games so why do you always comment on them?

Tavares isn't even playing well and still has 12 points in 10 games with a 9 game point streak going. Even though Tavares isn't playing like himself, he's still producing. Crosby has a BIG advantage over Tavares btw, Malkin on the 2nd line helps him. The Isles had their best shutdown line(Hamonic-Amac) against the Malkin line for most of the night and Malkin was irrelevant. Isles worst defensive pairing is Carkner-Donovan and Crosby kept going out against them. His goal came against that pairing, he didn't do much when Hamonic was out against him.
