Really liked what I saw this period. Aside, from the Kimmo turnover where he fanned on the pass and the Luke Schenn stretch pass turnover in the neutral zone, it was a flawless period.

EDIT: G is starting to look like his old self.

I didn't know exactly what to think of him as head coach going into this but I kept an open mind about it. I knew he headed up the PK which has been pretty consistent through out the last few years so that gave me some hope.

People always base things off what kind of player they were. There's very few coaches who are good at that on top being a good player during their playing a days. Larry Robinson is the only guy that comes to mind right now as a guy who was good at both.

How sweet it is to actually be enjoying watching the Flyers again. These past 80 minutes have been a dream compared to the first 9 or so games. Mason needs to patent those X-Ray specs though, someone will be making their own soon.

Still nothing from B Schenn though, maybe I expect too much?

Him & Voracek had that nice give & go rush that almost ended up as a goal off a Hartnell slap shot.

Just because he didn't show up on the score sheet doesn't mean he didn't have a good period. He forced a turnover in the nuetral zone and had a couple of nice opportunities in the offensive zone.

One problem I have with the Couts and Schenn battle is a lot of people let Couts get a pass on offense because of his defense, yet Schenn just exclusively needs to score to satisfy people. Schenn isn;'t bad defensively, and much better suited at center. He is second on the team in scoring(?) I believe, he has been pretty good through the early season, we can't say that about 75% of the team.

Not to be a downer here but making the semi-large assumption that this team turns it around we're going to be playing well enough and have the on paper roster to compete in the post-season. If the team is serious about that though they'll need to do something about Timonen. He sticks out like a sore thumb. His age is really being shown as he doesn't really excel at anything now that he makes one or two bad gaffes per game it seems usually involving turnovers.

I love the guy, but if the situation continues to develop as it has been for this team he needs to be dealt with one way or another. It's one thing to not have a number one D on this team, it's quite another to not have a number one D and have a the biggest name of your D seriously liable to worsen as the season progresses.

Any time someone tries to criticize a player coach by referencing his playing days I always think of one thing. Wayne Gretzky.

Finally team defense. This team would still be lost under Lavy.

I can't wait until Bob Boughner gets an NHL gig...

And then after all the moaning people will realise how good a coach he is!

Since we're going OHL here you reminded me of Dale Hunter who was/is good at both as well.

The bad players need to focus a lot more on the little things to make up for the lack of talent relative to other players. That sort of thing seems to produce good coaches.

Most great players don't become great coaches because they can't teach what came so easily to them as players.

Marginal players have to become students of the game because there's a fine line between their roster spot and the guys looking to replace them. That's why they often become decent coaches/scouts.

Excellent first period ! Excellent support for the D to dish the puck off etc ! Coburn and Grossman look good tonight. Mason was a great signing by Homer, as was Vinnie !Best 1st period of the YOUNG season !Grossman is vicious on the boards and out front ! Love that dudes tough nose style of play !Like to see 40 more mins of this type play .

Like Gretzky, I could imagine him being pissed his players aren't scoring 190 points per year and wondering what the hell they were doing out there.

Good period, they need to stop making ridiculous gaffes with the puck in the defensive zone, but otherwise, everything looks good.

"What do we do coach?"

"Go where the puck will be, not where it is."

"What the ****, coach?"

Keep up the pressure and I think we will start seeing more powerplays too. Have to make the other team pay for their dumb play. Let's go boys!! Win this period 2-0 as well!
