Should the Flyers trade Giroux for S. Jones

Short answer: maybe.

Flyers are not competing this season or next season. The earliest the Flyers compete is in 2 years and the window at that point is not very large.

In the alternative, the Flyers are rebuilding with S. Jones which would also likely mean trading Simmons and Voraek and positioning the team to compete in 3 years. The team would be younger and have a much larger window to actually win a cup.

I would certainly seriously entertain trading Giroux for S. Jones. You build a cup team from the goalie out. With S. Jones the Flyers could go after a free agent, either a star center or a star defenseman and have a prospect pool that was deep and has high end talent.

I love Giroux and love the way he plays and competes. But I think watching this team it is obvious that we are not winning a cup this year or next year. The earliest is two years and it is a short window.

I'd rather just trade Simmonds and add some actual young talent to the roster.

I'm not even sure if Nashville could handle Giroux's signing bonus money every July 1st on top of Weber's.

I like Mason as well I'd also not object to keeping MDZ and B Schenn, but trading Simmonds. Just my "keepers".

I'm at the point where I'd trade almost any player for good value. Seth Jones is not good value for Giroux.

I obviously voted no. But would you do it if it was:

Jones, Fiala, 1st?

In the end, trading G opens up a huge #1 C hole that we have no replacement for.

We have defensemen coming through the pipeline. We have no one that has any chance of becoming a #1 C.

So no I wouldn't ^

Yep... people constantly talk about how hard it is to get #1 Dmen... it is arguably just as hard to get a proper #1C.

Flyers have the D in the pipe-line... if they traded Giroux they would have no 1C, no-one in the pipe-line who could fill that role and likely would not be able to get a legit 1C in the next ~5 years without serious overpayment. The odds are Giroux is a better player age ~30-34 than anyone we could find to replace him with!

Does your opinion change if we somehow won the draft lottery and got Matthews?

Just throwing it out there.

Nope. Take Matthews add to our offense and trust that our D pans out

Yeh, I think that would be the best plan.

Matthews has less pressure has he grows into a world beater... and when he gets to his top level (probably starting at around ~21) we would have ~3-4 years where Giroux would also likely still be a legit 1st line center.

And as Giroux gets to ~34 an onwards with his skill-set he could take a step back and be a ~50 point two-way guy for a few years before retiring at likely ~37-38 (the average retirement age for guys of his quality.)

This is the Flyers we're talking about. There is zero chance that we get Matthews no matter where we end up since we're not allowed to have nice things. And if by some insane miracle we did get him, he'd suffer a career ending injury in his first game.
