Yeah, that just isn't going to happen. Not in the offseason, at least.

The Deadspin write up seemed pretty spot on. They can't rebuild because YES's deal with Time Warner is expiring, and if they get pulled off the air they'll lose waaaay more than they're paying him. So they gotta look competitive today, even if they're not really. Plus attendance dropped 7% from the new stadium average and will continue to. If you think a rebuild doesn't go over well here, try doing it in the Bronx.

Chicago Fire's and Chicago's own Mike Magee wins MLS MVP. He deserved it.

If the Dodgers get David Price, they should have no real competition.

That's what everyone said about them a year ago.

How are they going to fit a 20 million dollar pitcher in with Cano? The whole impetus of them getting him in the first place was that his real contract that costs against the luxury tax was going to be much lower than market value. Now it won't be.

Also I suspect the Yankees want to cut payroll talk isn't true.

I disagree. The luxury tax is a lot harsher now than ever before. That's why they're doing it.

I'm trying to find a good site with payroll numbers, but the Yankees are pretty well below $189 mil with A-Rod money gone.

When did they add a luxury tax to the MLB?

2003, though I think they recently made it somewhat more punitive, though I'm not entirely sure. Don't really feel the need to pay as much attention to the "cap" in baseball as opposed to hockey for obvious reasons.

All I know is that the Yankees have paid something like 90+% of the total league wide luxury tax since it was implemented.

When they open up the posting process, the Cubs need to strike quickly and decisively if they really want Tanaka. Can't be screwing around like they did with Cespedes and miss on him.

Didn't realize it had been around that long.

They're at 91 million minus A-Rod. Adding in Ellsbury and Cano (Say 25 million) they're at 136-141 million. That's with a vacancy at 3rd, closer, two starting pitchers, OF, and pre arbitration.

Well they have like 48 hours to put a bid in from when he's posted.

Right, so they can easily give Tanaka $18 mil a year and not blink.

Oh ya, I forgot that after the posting fee is accepted there's a short window to negotiate.

And then be at about 175 million, which is adding in conservative arbitration raises, with 3 spots to fill? I don't think so. The prevailing opinion is that the Yankees can't compete with the salary numbers he'll be given.

That gives them $14 mil to sign 3 players and still be under the tax. They may not want to be $50 mil over, but they may not mind going $10 mil over which gives them $24 mil to sign 3 players....again, its not going to stop them from getting a player they want.

But going out and signing Kuroda again would be about 8 million cheaper, which is where they thought Tanaka would be. I think it's much more likely that he and another SP are signed.
