Remember it was Sveum who changed Rizzo's stance and he took a crap all year on it. The coach has a lot to do with the younger players getting better.

He doesn't hit lefties well in the majors, but does in the minors. A lot of that can come to the coach helping him see things that he's not.

The Chicago Cubs are set to hire San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria as their manager, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the hiring has not been announced. The team was expected to make it official on Thursday. The move ends a long search that began with the last-place Cubs targeting New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi, only to be denied a shot when he decided to stay put.

What country are they from? It's not entirely clear.

Also, I'm left to wonder if a hypothetical flag burning amendment would make it illegal for them to burn out at the end of the game while wearing them, as has been par for the course for Northwestern.

Political "humor!"

Granderson rejects the Yanks QO, Hahn free to pursue him.

I'd rather have the 2nd rounder.

Is that what they would give up because of their record? I'm still not up to date on the new CBA rules.

Renteria seems like a good guy and obvioulsy I hope he does a great job. 4 managers in 5 years is just not acceptable at all. We need someone to come in and really take full control of this team and his own future as well. I hope Renteria comes in and does those things. He was the third choice and nobody else wanted him but Theo and Co. have to give him a lot of a slack and their full support nonetheless. We can't keep rolling over on managers every 2 to 3 years.

If I were the Sox, I'd target Salty and Peralta. They actually make good sense and are good, longer term fits.

No starting pitching makes sense considering that they already need to shed an arm with Johnson emerging. The outfielder group is poor past the top two guys unless you can get them on shorter term deals. DHs aren't an option, obviously.

That's not indicative of anything. It's the same case with many managers.

What this front office needs is the guy whose philosophy is closest to their own and who will take direction from them. If Renteria is that guy, then we're good to go. We don't need someone who is going to say "You do your job; I'll do mine". If those criteria have been met with Renteria, then the rest of it doesn't mean a damn thing.

Yeah I knew that the top 10 records were projected, but wasn't sure if there was still a compensatory pick.

I think it has to do with the rating of the free agent. For example, Pujols was a Type A free agent. The Cardinals got Anaheim's first-round pick and used it to get Wacha. Granderson appears to be a Type B if a 2nd is the compensation.

EDIT: Just saw Murray's post. That's another thing, too.

That's the old CBA.

I think West Brom could draw Chelsea. They play tight in the back and on the road they'll just be trying to grind out a point.

I think Chelsea will try to get back on the right track after their loss to Newcastle and come out really ready to go. A draw is possible, but highly unlikely.

Chelsea just hasn't impressed me this year. Lost to Everton, lost to Newcastle, drew Spurs, drew United, should have drew Aston Villa absolutely gifted a win vs City. They are a deep team but playing 3 days after playing Schalke in Germany....look ripe for a draw or loss.
