Buf-Fla

To
LW/RW Tomas Kopecky

To
RW Drew Stafford

For Sabres they move a guy who no longer fits and get vet to have around kids during rebuild for rest of this year and next + Save slightly on cap

For Panthers they get a guy who if he can break out of his funk is more talented player , Younger and only costs 1M more then Kopecky (Both are UFA's after next year)

Thoughts?

I can't really see the point of this for the Sabres.

Nothing personal about Kopecky...

Why does Buffalo do this? They can trade Stafford and get a 1st (see Gaustead trade)

We're not getting a 1st for Stafford.

Gaustad wasn't added to the Preds for his scoring.

Stafford brings back a second (which i'd rather have) and nothing else.

Stafford's value is closer to a 3rd than a 1st. He started tonight on the 4th line and ended it benched... on a team that is playing 4 teenagers and 7 rookies. I wish Sabres fans would stop bringing up Gaustad every time deadline possibilities are mentioned, like that's the baseline for deadline deals from now on.

Stafford is pretty useless and costly right now. I would peg his value as negative at this moment

I think it is time for Sabres to cut losses. Kopecky is a good guy to have in lockeroom with kids and type of complimentary player to have in a rebuild

Actually Buffalo needs to be concerned with the cap floor for next year.

If i was going to trade Stafford then Id rather do it for a fellow needs a change of scenery guy who has an upside (Booth)

In the Vanek trade Buffalo didnt retain salary so they can retain a good chunk of Stafford's contract thus increasing his value.

If Buffalo is going to pick up a vet from the Panthers, I would much rather see something involving Soupy coming home,

Counter

To

D Brian Campbell ($7.143M ~ UFA 2016)
LW Quinton Howden ($870K ~ RFA 2015)
2014 3rd RND pick

Sabres get a vet PMD to mentor Pysyk, Zads, Risto & McCabe, as well as a good prospect with nice PF upside in Howden and a 2014 3rd for the cap dump.

To

RW Drew Stafford ($4M ~ UFA 2015)
D Jamie McBain ($1.8M ~ RFA 2014)

Panther get an affordable project forward with 20-30 goal potential in Stafford, as well as a much cheaper PMD replacement for Soupy in RFA McBain. They also get out from under Campbells $7M+ per yr. salary.

Seems to me that Campbell is a pretty important piece of what Florida is doing right now. I'd hope for their sake they'd give him up if it makes them better in the long run, but aquiring McBain and Stafford don't do that just by virtue of being younger. Both players have limited upside and would be ideally overtaken by superior players by the time the Panthers build themselves into contenders.

No, we don't need more projects. Especially for Kopecky.

Lol, no. And Soup has a NMC, he's not gonna waive it to go back there.

I'd rephrase that as Versteeg should be the first guy that gets moved.

Kopecky still does his job night in and night out.

Easy no.

And Florida isn't looking to "get out" from that contract, I thought it's been beaten to death already around here. Also Campbell's value to the team is higher than he'd bring back in a trade, unless someone is prepared to massively overpay.
