Markov-Subban

where are they ranked in the nhl as a pairing? are there any clear cut better pairings than markov-subban?

their play together has been elite all season, hopefully it translates into the playoff success.

Been saying for a while now it's the best pairing in the league, and have no reason to change that opinion now.

I don't think any pairing is clear cut better. Weber Josi is up there with them. Other than that, I think they are the best.

I had Weber-Josi ahead of Subban-Markov but I am not so sure anymore.

I think they are the best.

It's easier to say Markov & Subban are in the top 3 def pair in the NHL since the begainning of the year and that we are lucky to have them!

I agree. They are the best pairing right now. It's just unfortunate that Markov is not 5 years younger. After he retires, it will be extremely hard to replace him.

Josi-Weber
Keith-Seabrook
Markov-Subban
Suter-Brodin
Muzzin-Doughty
Methot-Karlsson
Giordano-Brodie

Those are the top defensive pairings in the NHL. An argument could be made for all of them IMO.

You forgot Giordano-Brodie... at one point they were the best this year

The bolded are a bit behind.

The top 3 is:

Subban-Markov
Weber-Josi
Giordano-Brodie

then Seabrook-Keith

Muzzin isn't even playing with Doughty anymore.

It's definitely one of the best in the league, in the top-3, maybe even top-2. The only one I can say that is better with certainty is Josi-Weber, imo. The fact that Markov seems to be having a second wind is great for the team, and this pairing. When Markov retires, yikes.

I don't know if he'll be the guy to fill that Markov void. That's a huge void. Hopefully he's aided in developing properly, though. You never know.

Beaulieu won't be Markov, for sure. But the thing is, Markov's gonna be Markov for the next 3-4 years. It gives a lot of time for Beaulieu to learn and grow into the #2 role (albeit in a different way).

Guys around here assume Markov's wheels are gonna fall off next year and that Beaulieu will have to fill in now. That's just not the case.

Yeah... Prime Markov had stretches where he was playing like a Top 5 d-man in the world and was arguably the best PPQB in the league.

I had to laugh when people said Markov would be done after his injuries. I always taught that his game was too celebral and smart to be ended by a loss of speed. He definitely lost some efficiency but he's still great.

hrmmm you know who would have been the perfect Markov replacement.....nevermind

I agree it would take a top first round pick from the Habs with a bit of luck or a trade with roster players going

this was huge for us, last year i was kind of bummed to see how i thought markov was struggling

but it was his first full season in like two and a half years and 2 surgeries on a knee

this year hes in complete shape and i hope it lasts for the next couple years as well, we'll really need it, but he looks great out there, its ****ing awesome to have him back , we havent had an in shape markov in 3 YEARS

They are up there.

Subban is one of the very best and Markov is just a step below.

Subban is helping the old guy along

If not the best, they are the most consistent IMO.

are there any other D in Markovs age bracket who can handle his minutes consistently?

Not right now, but it's nothing we haven't seen before with Lidstrom - Chelios- Chara etc. Great Ds are first and foremost smart.

More forgotten pairings that should be in the conversation:

Campbell - Ekblad
Martin - Letang
Hedman - Stralman

At the very least he'll be as good as Markov is now. He doesn't have to be as good as prime Markov for us to have a great first pairing.
