Very interesting. I wonder what was coming back from Toronto.

Wow. I didn't like that we traded him within the conference to begin with but just imagine him going to one of our biggest rivals. I would imagine that Darcy would have driven up the price for a rival, plus salary retention...we would have gotten a nice package

Edit: I don't see why you guys think Gardiner makes sense. Our defense core is set for years with Myers, Ehrhoff, Pysyk, Ristolainen, Zadorov, McCabe, McNabb, etc

Wow, I'm also very curious. He's not a need but he's a damn good player. Imagine a top 9 winger group of:

JVR-Kessel
Lupul-Vanek
Kulemin- Clarkson

Disgusting...

I feel like Toronto is involved in everything… I wonder if every team is like this but only Toronto leaks stuff to the media, or if they just are just more active than most teams..

I doubt we'd give up signed core players plus the picks for a UFA. That was likely the asking price though.

No real reason for the Leafs to have been interested here. They have Jvr, Lupul, Kessel, and Clarkson all locked up long term.

No reason to give up assets for 1 year of Vanek really. Had Vanek been a Center then I'm sure Nonis would have been all over it.

Makes sense that it was Buffalo that offered and not the other way around. I'm usre Vanek would be an upgrade on the Leafs but not one that was needed based on cost

Well I feel like the Sabres probably offered Vanek to 29 other teams as well

Seems fishy to me. The Leafs would have no way to re-sign Vanek, so why would they dump the assets necessary to acquire him especially since they have no shortage of goal scoring in their top 6?

Probably a combination of the following;

- Smaller market media aren't as crazy and don't report all the stupid small stuff.
- massive management core. More people involved the more leaks there will be.
- Toronto is a team others might think they can get a good deal from if they offer pieces that might put us over the top.

Sabres offering Vanek means they obviously wanted something from Toronto. With teams apparently inquiring about Gardiner i'm guessing it was something like Gardiner + Reimer

I don't see why Toronto would want Vanek at all though... definitely couldn't fit him under the cap without a big contract going the other way, don't need a winger, soft player, no room to re-sign him

Doesn't seem likely that a teams first choice is to trade a player of Vanek's calibre within the division.

Why? I'm sure that Buffalo was calling everyone offering Vanek. Almost anyone he traded with would have had cap issues, so he would have had to retain salary.

Offering Vanek to Toronto doesn't mean a lot. GMs make crappy trades all the time. Just because we as fans don't think Toronto needs more goal scoring, doesn't mean Toronto doesn't take a chance on it, with the thought that they can figure things out this spring on how to resign people.

Hey Nonis, I'll trade you Vanek at 50% for Kadri, Gardiner and a 1st. Toronto counters with whatever... nothing comes of it and that's that.

But that doesn't mean that Toronto didn't have a shot at Vanek. GMs will call lots of people trying to move someone before pulling the trigger on a trade, unless they have their sights set on someone very specific. And seeing the return, I don't see that as the case here.

Wouldnt make sense for Toronto anyway.... Vanek would probably be our #3 go to guy so his production would likely drop off and we have an abundance of wingers it wouldnt have made sense to deal for another.

Wonder what Buffalo asked for in return?

I was never that big on the whole "don't trade within your division" code, but I am even less so with the expanded divisions. There are too many teams in your division to not include them in the trade market. Also, with Buffalo being years from caring about such things, it really wouldn't have been a big deal imo. I'd just use it as an excuse to ask for slightly more in return.

That doesn't come close to the Islanders deal.

If you believe Dreger, every trade in the NHL gets run by the Leafs first. It's getting a little ridiculous.

That said, the Sabres probably shopped Vanek to a bunch of teams...but obviously the Leafs bring in the ratings and hits and retweets and all that good stuff, so here we are.

Whats the point of Dreger's tweet? I pretty sure Sabres offered Vanek to every team in the NHL.
