Wow. I didn't like that we traded him within the conference to begin with but just imagine him going to one of our biggest rivals. I would imagine that Darcy would have driven up the price for a rival, plus salary retention...we would have gotten a nice package
Edit: I don't see why you guys think Gardiner makes sense. Our defense core is set for years with Myers, Ehrhoff, Pysyk, Ristolainen, Zadorov, McCabe, McNabb, etc
I feel like Toronto is involved in everything… I wonder if every team is like this but only Toronto leaks stuff to the media, or if they just are just more active than most teams..
Probably a combination of the following;
- Smaller market media aren't as crazy and don't report all the stupid small stuff.
- massive management core. More people involved the more leaks there will be.
- Toronto is a team others might think they can get a good deal from if they offer pieces that might put us over the top.
I call bullcrap on this one. dreger is just a phony who need hits.
Why? I'm sure that Buffalo was calling everyone offering Vanek. Almost anyone he traded with would have had cap issues, so he would have had to retain salary.
Offering Vanek to Toronto doesn't mean a lot. GMs make crappy trades all the time. Just because we as fans don't think Toronto needs more goal scoring, doesn't mean Toronto doesn't take a chance on it, with the thought that they can figure things out this spring on how to resign people.
Hey Nonis, I'll trade you Vanek at 50% for Kadri, Gardiner and a 1st. Toronto counters with whatever... nothing comes of it and that's that.
But that doesn't mean that Toronto didn't have a shot at Vanek. GMs will call lots of people trying to move someone before pulling the trigger on a trade, unless they have their sights set on someone very specific. And seeing the return, I don't see that as the case here.

Wouldnt make sense for Toronto anyway.... Vanek would probably be our #3 go to guy so his production would likely drop off and we have an abundance of wingers it wouldnt have made sense to deal for another.
Doesn't seem likely that a teams first choice is to trade a player of Vanek's calibre within the division.
I was never that big on the whole "don't trade within your division" code, but I am even less so with the expanded divisions. There are too many teams in your division to not include them in the trade market. Also, with Buffalo being years from caring about such things, it really wouldn't have been a big deal imo. I'd just use it as an excuse to ask for slightly more in return.
