The Oilers current situation (which, elsewhere on the boards, I saw quite accurately described as a 'dumpster fire') speaks volumes about the incompetence of their management and coaching. Their drafting has been abysmal. They have been mainly unsuccessful on the trade-front (Perron, excepted). They are unable to attract any worthwhile free agents. The team culture seems horrible. They have a terrible coach who, less than 20 games into a 4 year contract, seems to have lost the team (although, i'm not sure he ever had them to begin with).

Honestly, I do not see how they are going to get better any time soon. Their management seems ill-equipped to make the moves necessary to improve the team in any meaningful way.

imo, it was a major mistake for them not to trade for Schneider, even though it was a big asking price. According to Elliotte Friedman, the Canucks wanted a 1st, 2nd, and the Oilers d prospect Martin Marincin. Honestly, they should have just done it even if they thought it was an overpayment. If they'd then used one of their top 6 skilled guys to get some sort of reasonable return at defense, they might be okay right now.

Per Dreger on Twitter, the possibility of extending overtime to ten minutes is on the docket for discussion at the GM meeting.

https://twitter.com/darrendreger/sta...01933530841088

I'm okay with that.

Yes, plz.

57% of OT games go a shootout. It's nonsense.

How about five minutes of 4-on-4 and the last three minutes involving 3-on-3 play? Shootouts suck. They are for the fans, but as a fan that is obsessive with the standings, I hate shootouts. I don't feel great if my team wins a shootout to be honest. I don't like shootouts, and a skill competition shouldn't dictate who makes the playoffs. That was garbage a few years back when Philadelphia and New York had a shootout with the winner qualify for the eighth and final playoff seed.

While very true, the spin on that is despite this fact, they're still a tranwreck as a franchise. They have one of the worst records in the league despite being right up against the salary cap. That's not a good combination.

Edmonton has much more talent to build around so they're far ahead of the Dark Age Hawks, but they're doing a terrible job of said building. That franchise is a mess.

3 on 3 is just as much as a gimmick as a shootout is. 10 minutes of 4 on 4 with a shootout after that would be fine, you'd see a dramatic reduction in games that end in a shootout with that system.

I think a longer OT would benefit the Hawks more than 5mins with a shootout, so I'm all for it.

I'd love to extend OT. The longer the delay to the shootout, the better.

I'm not entirely against the shootout as a way to give regular season games a definitive ending time, but there's no question that it's not really hockey.

The NHL would only benefit from letting real hockey teams play real hockey.

Already hearing good points against on the main board... would ten minute OTs require a third intermission to Zamboni the ice?

You're not going far enough. I say we just have a shoot the puck competition to determine OT winners.

Like it or not, 3 on 3 OT is being discussed by the GMs as an option.

Five minutes or under of 3-on-3 play is fine with me.

I don't know, imagine if after drafting Toews and Kane we didn't sign Hossa in free agency and kept being a bottom 10 team in the league for 5 years.

Like I said, the dark ages aren't something I'm too familiar with but this oilers franchise is pathetically bad in every single aspect

They made the Conference Final pre-Hossa. He knew what he was getting into when he signed here: a team that was ready to win the Cup. Oilers aren't that.

They need the right mix of a young star and a veteran leader. I honestly believe Toews wouldn't be the player he is today without Martin Lapointe. One of my favorite moments as a fan of the Blackhawks was when late in a game that the Hawks were getting blown out against San Jose like 7-0. Marty wins a board battle behind the net, skates around front and shovels it in five hole. He doesn't celebrate for a second. He turns, pissed as hell, and skates straight to the bench.

Everybody likes to win. You win with guys that HATE losing.

Just meant what if we couldn't sign big free agents like the Oilers can't.

The Hawks might have won a cup with Havlat. Not gonna argue that Hossa wasn't an upgrade, but that team was stacked regardless.
