On paper, I LOVE our lineup. Seriously. Now I wish they can just produce and I hope we resign Downie already. Wouldn't mind trading Hartnell and Timmo/Coburn for an upgrade at D though.

I suggest you guys read the comments on the Downie trade article on the Flyers main site. You won't believe some of the **** some Flyers "fans" are saying on there. I mean wow, outside of this board and my family and buddies it seems flyers fans are morons

It is crazy, everyone on here, all my hockey following friends (2 Canucks fans, a Carolina fan, a Minny fan, 2 other Flyers fans, a Blackhawks fan, a Detroit fan and a few Finns) and my brothers (Flyers and San Jose fans) all think this trade was won by the Flyers.

Yet on the flyers site and newspapers you would think the Flyers got trade *****!

My most vivid memory of Downie as a Flyer:

He started the "Back With a Vengeance" season off with a bang. The Flyers went on to have like 7 or 8 suspensions that year.

Also the commentator "leaves his feet a bit there".

OK so I didn't start obsessively following the Flyers until late in the 09-10 season (although I would watch games sporadically since I was like 6) so I never saw Downie when he was on the Flyers and have only seen him when playing against him but I never paid him much attention. From what I've read about this trade so far and judging by your reactions I'm pretty excited to see him play. Since I know nearly nothing about him I figured I'd ask, do you really think he'll be effective on the 1st line with G and Vinny?

Downie has #9 according to the Flyers Official Website... I know Gervais has #27, but couldn't he be persuaded to give it up... considering that he is far down on the Farm food chain... Downie has had that number in ever stop I believe.

And what if Uppy is brought back... what then... huh?

The That's Hockey guys on TSN said categorically that the trade was a win for Holmgren. Like most of us have said here, they noted that Talbot is a great veteran presence and hard-working PKer, but Holmgren couldn't walk away from a deal like that, one he apparently had worked on for a few weeks.

I don't think I was alone in waiting for a trade with a sense of impending doom. I'm gobsmacked that Holmgren walked away from this deal not only with decent value but with an excellent deal. I was no fan of Downie when he first was drafted and took the ice with the Flyers, and the 20-game suspension from his preseason (!) hit on McAmmond. By all accounts, he has matured since then, and he adds a scoring touch that Talbot doesn't possess.

Excellent job!

Second step is landing a high-end defensive prospect with high offensive upside without giving up the farm.

Downie is such a lovable psycho. I understand why the Avs did this, but it still hurts and value wise you guys definitely won.

He wore 9 with Tampa Bay, switched back to 27 with Colorado, and then changed it to 17.

Being able to go against the heavyweights is the most useless role one can have on a roster, especially if they have no other skills.

Just read it. Really he is just another example of the lack of professionalism in the world of sports journalism. A sports journalist who is incapable of setting aside his ego and personal feelings to put forth a decent article.

You would think decades of Rich Hoffman, and Phil Jasner would rub off on this town's young sports journalists but sadly they haven't .

I don't think that third line skates well enough as a whole and it doesn't have anyone who can carry the puck into the zone

agreed. As nodlesque as Raffl is at least he is a tremendous skater and one of our fastest.

I read the first paragraph saw his motive so I skimmed through the rest. I'm sorry but every GM in the league would do that trade 10 out of 10 times, it has nothing to do with "Flyers mentality". The guy acts like Downie is some stiff.

A simple switch of Downie & Raffl should be fine. Put Downie on the first line, Hall centering the fourth line with Rinaldo & Raffl would be solid to me.

This is the lineup I would go with

Read/Downie-Giroux-Lecavalier
Hartnell-Schenn-Voracek
Read/Downie-Couturier-Simmonds
Raffl-Hall-Rinaldo

Honestly wouldn't mind seeing Harntell on the top line again if he can get going but if he does it will likely be from playing with Voracek so we might be better off leaving him there. But the above lineup is where I would start.

What is it with Sielski and these others? Do they not realize every player who hits and fights isn't a goon? I mean you don't even need to watch the games to know Downie is more than that. I feel like until the Flyers ice a team full of nothing but Euro panises from line 1 to 4 that they will always be criticized by these know nothing beat writers for being ''stuck in the 70's''. This isn't Olympic hockey. You can't do that.
