Malhotra 1yr/2way deal

http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=689360

Quote:
RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with center Manny Malhotra (mal-HOH-truh) on a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Malhotra $600,000 at the NHL level, or $125,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level, with a guarantee of $250,000.
Not too bad.

4th line center? At least our faceoffs will improve right? How has he played down in the AHL?

Figured this was only a matter of time. Hope his PK skills are still up to snuff. It'd be awesome to take some of that pressure/load off of j staal, so maybe he could focus a little more on putting the friggin puck in the net every once and a while ...

Has anyone seen him play in CLT? I am curious as to how his vision is now.

His stat line in Charlotte seems to indicate he hasn't done much so far.

Manny is not a scorer. As long as he wins faceoffs (something we desperately need) I'm good with this signing.

Hope he can still play.

I have to figure JR kept a close eye on him in Charlotte and wouldn't have signed him if he didn't feel that he could.

This. We're talking about a 4th line C and PK specialist. The question is whether Malhotra is an upgrade over Sutter at 4C right now (obvious) and whether Malhotra is an upgrade over Nash at 4C once everyone is healthy. I think this is likely, and at worst Nash can move to wing to bump Bowman or Westgarth out.

Ideally when healthy:

Gerbe - E Staal - Semin
Tlusty - J Staal - Lindholm
Skinner - Nash - Ruutu
Bowman - Malhotra - Dwyer

This will help manage the Staals' minutes a little better. Having Manny skate the tough minutes on the PK removes at least one of our top-6 centers from that equation, which in turn allows us to roll better lines after the PK ends. Could be one of those small signings that has domino effects for the rest of the players' performance.

You'd think that's how it'll shake out but it seems as if Muller thinks Jordan and Dwyer are conjoined twins.

I'd flip Skinner and Tlusty

I hope Manny takes away from Eric's PK time more then anything. Jordan has been awesome on the PK, I'd like his offense to pick up but I don't think his whiffs have anything to do with being on the PK

That right side snipe set up by Jordan makes me think Bowman's better at RW. With that said, Dvorak's our best bet for depth when healthy.

Agreed. The timing is perfect. A little more focus in Eric's ice time might do him a lot of good.

I like this signing. No risk and most likely an improvement. Plus it sounds like he's a pretty good guy too

He's been pretty good in Charlotte and a good leader for them.

Does Manny bring any size/hitting with him? **** on Sutter as much as you want, the guy was averaging almost 1 hit per shift

I thought the same thing at first, but then again, I kind of like that they ended up getting the job done together. I bet they did the biggest bro hug ever when they found it.
