Didn't you say the same about my opinion of Gagner before I debunked it?

I think I've more crushed his role on this team more than his play itself. I didn't like the $5M/per extension given the circumstances but I understood that there wouldn't have been a realistically better option for depth.

As of last year when Yak broke out and showed top-6 talent, Hemsky became redundant. He's not a 3rd line winger. But with the way things are going now, I'm open to moving Eberle to shake up the top-6. Hemmer can still play top-6 minutes, and Eberle most likely has the highest value of our three top-6 RW.

Trade question for Edmonton Fans

Would you trade Nail Yakupov, Justin Schultz and David Perron for PK Subban, David Desharnais and Rene Bourque?

Subban last year's Norris Trophy winner will make your defense better powerplay, penalty kill and defense. Bourque is a local and give veteran presence to Hall, Eberle an RNH. Desharnais is a fast player who needs a fresh start.

Subban is an incredibly valuable player, but that's way more than I'd be willing to give up for him.

Probably not. If Desharnais was Fucale... Maybe

actually....
Ehrhoff for Smid, Marincin, 2nd in 2015
Schultz, 1st for Byfuglien
Gagner + Petry for Coburn, Couturier, Rinaldo (but strictly D here)
Sign Phaneuf
Re-sign Belov

Ehrhoff-Byfuglien
Phaneuf-Coburn
Ference-Belov
Klefbom

"Sarcasm" "Would be Great if There Wasn't A Cap"

I'm greedy here. But my point is, this has to be the focus. Byfuglien, Ehrhoff, Phaneuf are in my opinion the 3 best targets to acquire, Ehrhoff probably being one we can do in season, the other two are offseason moves. We just have to pick 1-2 probably, at LEAST 1 please.

the point I'm also trying to make is that we can get good D-men without having to give up a kid or Perron, I believe.

You know, if/when we draft Ekblad, we'll have 5/6 spots on D filled.

Petry, J. Schultz and Ference won't be going anywhere. Petry represents our best D-man, Ference is our captain and J. Schultz is our young D-man with potenital. Essentially I don't think any of these 3 are getting traded.

That leaves Smid. Now people have said he doesn't fit with how Eakins plays, which makes sense. Yet I highly doubt they trade a player who has in the past shown he can play 2nd pairing minutes well. Add in MacT signed him to his new deal and he's somewhat of a leader, I don't think he's going to get traded.

What this means is our D next season would essentially have one spot open to be filled either through FA (big contract to Phanuef for example) or trade (Ehrhoff would be a dream, but I doubt it...).

I've turned a corner on Justin Schultz if you haven't noticed....

if it takes him to get a top pairing D, I'm on board. I know he's young, but there is nothing suggesting to me that he isn't just a good offensive D-man. No defensive skills.

Reminds me of seeing NYR trying to deal Del Zotto right now.

The problem with Justin Schultz is that the Oilers can't use him properly right now. He's being thrown to the wolves much like the Yakupov-Gagner-Eberle line and just looks completely outmatched. J Schultz needs to either play with a steady, consistent, veteran who can act as a calming presence (so not Ference/N Schultz/Belov), or be sheltered by a legitimate top pairing as a PP specialist playing butter minutes much like Yandle (OEL+Michalek) or Shattenkirk (Pietrangelo+JBo). Hopefully Ekblad can have a Doughty/Jones like impact and either Nurse/Klefbom develop into a top pairing guy as well.

I think they should trade Jultz, Nultz...replace them with Dulikov, and a "defensive" top 4 guy...J-Georg/Karlzner/D-rardi/Broburn/....Gudbranson....

......then pull the trigger on that obligatory draft Ekblad miracle option....

RandomDgoon-Petry
Kulikov-Belov/Larsen/Klefbom
Ference-Smid

with Nurse and Ekblad coming up through dat System....keep players in the AHL for at least one season as step one to end the gong show.

Somebody posted that sports stat website. We have to play .500 hockey for the rest of the way to have a 67% chance of finishing 14th in the Western conference.

We have a very good chance at Ekblad.

No chance..

No interest in DD and Bourque what so ever.. probably hold negative value..
Subban is worth more than Yak since he is proven but the other 2 offset it .
Take out both J.Schultz+Perron add Arcobello and its close..

Right now I'd like to keep:

Hall- Nuge - XXX
Perron - XXX - Yakupov (no way I'm selling low on him, he's got what it takes to be a high end goal scorer)
XXX - Gordon - XXX
XXX/Gazdic - XXX - XXX

XXX - XXX
XXX - Petry
Ference - XXX

Goaltending:
XXX
XXX

That still leaves a huge amount of potential turnover and the team can really be re-shaped drastically. I'd also make sure to hold onto Klefbom and Nurse till we really know what we have in them. I'm also o.k. with keeping Belov or J. Schultz in a 3rd pairing role, J. Schultz gets a lot of flack and he deserves it, but he's still young and could be a really useful piece going forward with the right tutelage.
Anytime u are expecting 19-21 yr olds to lead you to the promised land they better be generational talents or insulated with very good vets....something the oilers don't have.... For the Oilers to compete for cup we are either gonna have to wait for the kids to improve or gets some better help for them..Gagner needs to be better same with Hemsky..on a cup contending team......RNH should be a 2nd liner at best getting easy competition..Justin...bottom pairing....Ebs.....second lner.....Yakupov eased in on a 2nd or 4th line with lots of pp time.....Hall is the only one truly ready for prime time first line minutes....when he is healthy.....these kids are all very talented hockey players.....but they do not seem to understand the pro game well enough to go against veteran top lines...the kids are being fed to the wolves and expected to go against the best , but they just are not ready yet and getting eatin alive so far which is also effecting there confidence.....once a pro athlete loses his confidence they are a complete mess.........just like our Edmonton Oilers
This is what we really have right now
Hall-Gagner-Ebs
Perron-RNH- yak
Xxxxx-Gordon-xxxx
Xxxx-xxxx-

Xxxx-xxxx
Xxxx-Petry
Ference-Justin

It's okay boys, we only need to go like 46-21-0 in order to make the playoffs.

Del Zotto is actually better defensively than Schultz.

Hopefully, they deal J.Schultz back to Anaheim. If the team wants to win, they need to have as few one dimensional schultzs (hemskys, gagners, yakupovs, and eberles) as possible.
