Who would have thought losing Cleary's veteran leadership would affect the team this much

This will probably convince Holland that the kids are not ready and that Cleary needs to be brought back

If Holland thinks this team is suffering because it lacks veterans, and not because it lacks its original top 5 centers which includes its 2 best players, then we have bigger problems than the return of Cleary.

With how the youngsters are playing is there really a chance Cleary comes back at all? In my opinion it would be a huge mistake.

Is there ANYBODY you would take out for Cleary?

Clearly I think everybody agrees with the second part..

When he's back and healthy though would I be surprised to see him in the lineup? No.

Glendening does most of what Babcock liked about Cleary, but with more speed, and not an old broken down body. So hopefully the Cleary saga has finally ended.

No, there is no way you can bring Cleary back. There is not even a spot for Jurco on next years team without moving some guys. We are probably bringing Legwand and Alfredsson back, there is just no way? right??? right???????

Agreed. If "Glendening is a useless plug", what does that make Dan "farts" Cleary? hahaha.

I appreciate everything Cleary has done for us, but it would be inexcusable to bring him back into the lineup now that we've seen some of the young guys perform well across a reasonable sample size. Experience should no longer be a consideration when it's evident we can fill his place with younger, faster, and hungrier guys.

I want to believe he isn't coming back since the guy has been a healthy scratch almost all year. Unfortunately, Kenny is like a black hole when it comes to washed up veterans. Until next season is over, I won't believe Cleary is truly gone.

If Cleary asks to come back for like one million dollars, i think Kenny would definitely bring him back.

I would probably take him over Ferraro in a similar role.

No. Cleary is and has been done as a player for years. Bringing him back would be beyond stupid. Give him a job in the organization.

Nope, and I wouldn't be surprised if Babcock is no longer a big fan of the guy. Babs put himself out there to get Cleary signed despite the glut of forwards, put Nyquist in the minors so that Cleary could play, and gave the guy endless chances, and Cleary rewarded him by becoming one of the worst players in the league. Sure, this was largely due to his body being wrecked probably beyond repair, but either way Babcock certainly seems aware that Cleary is of little value to this team on the ice.

Cleary is done in Detroit, and I'll be surprised if he finds another team willing to sign him.

I believe he means in the short term, i.e. until someone else returns to the lineup. And I disagree with him anyhow. I don't want to see Cleary on the ice for this team ever again. His body is simply too far gone.

I want Jurco on the team next year. And Cally and Lando fighting for extra forward spots. Just say no to Bert, Cleary and even Alfie.

Nyquist and Tatar have combined for 35 goals so far this season. How many more could have been scored if Cleary wasn't signed?

Well he won't play again this year due to injury it looks like. And the fact that even his BFF Babs started scratching him before that tells me he is 99.9% not coming back next year.

The .1% is just because you never know with Holland and his vets.

Signing Cleary forced Nyquist to the minors and Tatar to the press box is Holland gonna make that mistake next year with Sheahan, Jurco, etc? I doubt it.

Agreed. By the time January rolled around, Cleary's continued presence in the lineup (and the ridiculous amount of ice time given to him) was making me want to no longer watch games, as a player whose presence was clearly detrimental to the team was not only being played, but being played far too much and in every situation. Consider this ridiculous fact: for a long stretch, only Cleary and Kronwall were playing on both the power play and the penalty kill.

The total number of power play goals scored while Cleary was on the ice: one.

I sincerely doubt it. I don't think he's yet fully aware of his situation.

Even if re-signing Cleary defies all logic, I still wouldn't be surprised if it happened. Same goes with Samuelsson. "Sammy provides size and a right handed shot". Holland works in mysterious ways. Why not trade Mantha, a 2nd and Miller for Eric Cole?
