Howson has loved Del Zotto for a long time as well. I think everything points to this being a bit more than just some baseless speculation by fans and the media, but I'd be very leery about acquiring Yakupov.
Oh I agree. But if you can get something done with Del Zotto being the only NHL roster player going the other way, you have to think long and hard about it.

Out of all the players that are free agents next season, I think Del Zotto is the least likely to be here going forward. Hes already the 3rd best left defenseman on the roster, and Moore - who is cheaper/cost controlled - is nipping at his heels. More importantly, Del Zotto has seemingly lost the ability to run a powerplay.

I think a deal that could make sense is a move around Staal and Yakupov. Theoretically.
You wouldn't do Boyle for Yakupov either...

Pass on him.
I like Hemsky and I think he could be a good bargain down the road, don't seem to slow down at all. Is he a new Ray Whitney?

But, I have a hard time seing a team with both Zucc and Hemsky on it. Its one or the other...

Ill take the guy that doesn't cost $5M per year and an asset to acquire.

Define roster player? Who's off the table when it comes to yak? Kreider Callahan Hagelin stepan brassard? Have no problem doing del zotto plus pick or prospect for dz and I do believe that gets it done

Also less injury history. If Sather trades for Hemsky, I'm going to royally pissed...

judging by the game we play, dont know if Yakupov is the best person for this team.
Matt Martin leads the league in hits, on avg a little more than 4 hits per game.

Evander Kane is the top 2 line forward that hits the most in the NHL right now. 3 hits per game. He hits 12% of his shifts.

Another Kane, Pat Kane, has one (1) hit in 352 shifts. Its not his game to skate around at full speed all the time, but thats hardly rare.

Would you do Staal? J Moore? McDonagh? I think that's what he meant.

Edmonton would have little to no interest in players like Boyle, Pyatt, Pouliot, MZA, Dorsett, D. Moore.

Boyle is a type of player that team needs.

He may be a "throw-in" type but as he is an upcoming UFA, I doubt he makes much of a difference in acquiring a 20 year old former #1. That's what I meant.

Defense: Underrated. He works hard and goes hard after the puck. Flaws? You bet, but not that big of a worry for a young kid.

Work-ethic: Overall, probably really good. The kid obviously has a tremendous drive and must work out extremely hard to be as skilled as he is. He is hardly a floater on the ice.

Mentality: Some reason for concern. Given that its a hockey player we are talking about, his attitude could possibly be qualified as a big negative.

Show boat. Very star focused. Big head.

How this will play out, I think solely depends on where he ends up, how well he plays and how he is threated. If he can't really meet his expectations and media/fans/coaches/brass in his club starts to pressure him, it could be a recipe for disaster. He he plays really well, I don't have any reason for concern. In between good or bad? I think it comes down to the city he is in. His teammates etc.

Bottom line, I think Nail got much fewer question marks than Kovalchuk. Kova had a bigger head and bigger flaws than Yakubov. And Kova was loved in Atlanta, and the moment he wound up on a slightly better team he took that team to the Stanley Cup finals by himself. Pat Kane is a player in Chicago that seem to have some issues to for sure. I hardly think Kane is all that much better than Nail. OTOH, I think there is a bigger risk with Nail Yakupov than Kane and Kovalchuk, because Nail is not quite as good as those two. And its when these players starts to struggle that there are reason for concern, as we have seen over the years.

The big risk with Yakupov is definitely the KHL. And then its a great minus that you have to pay him so darn much instantly when he becomes a RFA.

I agree, but I like that he got alot of potential to become a really good PP player. He is a great passer and a good shooter, and he got the really modern really quick puck handling ability that is the trademark of any good PP. I really really think a PP with Yaks down low on the right side and BR up on the right point could have alot of potential.

Then I think Yaks is a bit overrated 5 on 5. He is small and not extremely fast, he is extremely quick feets, but he isn't the type that constantly is flying the length of the ice.

Or he asked him 6 days ago when Kreider was still a bust...

I think you gotta lean towards moving Kreider for Yakupov no doubt. Its so easy now to say that we need Kreider, but wait till we start to get up there as a contender but -- like so many others -- falls short because we don't have quite the elite talent that the best team haves, and that talent like it often does seem completely impossible to get. Like how often can you get a really talented player? You are lucky to get one every ten years.

For all that Kreider is doing right now, he seems to play out as a 2nd-3rd line winger who can pop around 40 pts. My point is just, I have a hard time seing us "not" being able to replace Kreider if we are willing to pay 3.5-4.5m on the UFA market. We could be forced to wait a long time for a kid as talented as Yaks.
I stopped reading after this.

Are there legitimate sources reporting Yakupov to NYR? Or is this all just fan speculation due to the scouting party at the game last night?

Definitely agree that he's the most likely candidate to go. It really depends on who / what would be going in the package, and who is coming back. I'm just not a huge fan of Yakupov's ability to fit in with the team as it's currently assembled.

Im with you. But when has Sather ever given any consideration to the bolded? He wants a skill team this year - Yakupov is advertised as a skill guy. That seems to be the depth of the analysis given to Yakupov's potential place on this roster.

Never. Which is why I think there's a decent chance something goes down.

Trade for Yakupov, then realize after 20 games he can't play the left side. Trade Nash to compensate. Sounds about right for Sather.

i still dont understand why callahan has to be the top 6 RW though. even if yakupov plays RW Nash, Yak, Cally should all be able to play their natural position in top 3 lines.

The rangers need more scoring period, but this is also looking like a long term replacement for Nash

Callahan on the 3rd is great RW depth. It shouldn't be an issue. The top teams in this league have depth. AV likes to spread the wealth anyway.

Kreider--Stepan--Nash
Hagelin--Brassard--Yukapov
Zuccarello--Richards--Callahan

Toughness is missing....

Messier does work for Edmonton. He is a consultant. Messier wanted to stay in the game in case another opportunity came up. The whole Russian player playing in New York is so overrated.

I like this point.

Callahan will get a **** ton of special teams time, especially PK. He will get top six minutes, let him play 3rd line minutes 5v5.
