They only rejected QOs. That doesn't mean they won't re-sign with the Sox.

Unless baseball QOs are different from NHL QOs?

They just rejected the 1 year, $14 million qualifying offer that we had to give them in order to ensure that we get draft picks in case they leave. Of course Napoli and Ellsbury weren't going to take 1 year deals. They haven't signed anywhere else yet. Could still sign a real contract with the Sox.

I thought he was going to sign a half-season contract with a club option for the other half.

Report was fake but I would be okay with Ruiz for two years.

I know that signing a bunch of mid-tier free agents worked last offseason (Victorino, Napoli, Drew, Dempster), but that was because we had a lot of holes to fill. This year, I'd so much rather go with Lavarnway and/or Bogaerts/Middlebrooks as cheap options over Ruiz/McCann and Drew if it means we get to give that money we save to Ellsbury.

I mean, Drew and Beltran with Bogaerts and Middlebrooks splitting time will be more expensive than Ellsbury, a backup infiielder and Bogaerts and Middlebrooks in starting spots. And I'd much prefer the latter.

Ruiz is one guy I might go out and get. I think he'll be a good value. But I'd still rather give his money to Ellsbury, unless Ellsbury's contract ends up being completely ridiculous.

Oh, and obviously I hope Napoli comes back. That shouldn't be too much of an issue though. Not like he's going to want a huge raise or a 6 year deal.

What do you consider ridiculous?
He already turned down $20 million a year.

I'd give him $20 million. I'd even give him the 150 for 7 that MLBTR is predicting (that's 21.4 per year). Like I said, still cheaper than a Beltran/Drew combo, which is a possible alternative.

What would you rather have? Ellsbury at 7/150 with both kids starting on the left side of the infield or no Ellsbury, but Drew at 4/48 and Beltran at 2/30? Because I like the Ellsbury option better and we'd save $5+ million short term. Or even Ellsbury and Lavarnway vs. Beltran and McCann (who's hit .242/.316/.426 over the last 2 years) at 5/80? Again, I'd prefer Ellsbury, and in that scenario we'd save $9+ million.

Ruiz is one of the guys I like, but again, not at the cost of Ellsbury.

If someone offers Ellsbury like 8 years at $25+ million per year, of course we gotta let him go at some point, but I don't think something like 7/150 is unreasonable.

Ellsbury has had injury problems and he's a 30 year old whose entire game is based on speed. I don't want him on one of those ridiculous long-term contracts. I'm hoping Cherington does the smart thing by letting him walk and taking the pick.

Francona did a great job with Cleveland but that's pretty ridiculous. Red Sox went from worst to first and won the World Series.

Complete ********. Francona wouldn't have even led Cleveland to the playoffs without beating up on a weak schedule. Terrible.

It's not fair to say his entire game is based on speed. He may have been our most consistent hitter this year. He's a career .297 hitter. And he showed real power in 2011.

Where would you rather spend that money? Do you honestly think Drew and Beltran would help this team more? Or would you rather the ownership hold onto more money because in 5 years, he'll probably be overpaid and you really like draft picks?
