Todd Cordell ‏@ToddCordell 1m

#NJDevils prospect Blake Coleman is off to a pretty good start w/ Miami of Ohio this year. Has six goals and 10 points in eight games.

What happened to this teams ability to find hidden gems such as: Madden, Rafalski, and to a lesser extent Clarkson & Greene?

The rest of the league has caught up. The devils are just another organization now.

Unrelated to Coleman, but Cordell gets on my nerves so much.

We might have a shoot out goal if he was here. Rolston's slapshot is better than any move any of these guys out on in a shoot out.

I'll take Stevens, Nieds, Rafalski, Madden, hell Sarge.

I feel like all he does is mooch off of actual writers, and tries to pass it off as his own work. Maybe I'm missing something?

Heck, even Oduya was a find at that juncture of his career. The landscape for undrafted UFAs has changed in recent years. Lou remains pretty strict in terms of performance bonuses and most of the 'top' undrafted guys will get bonuses in their deals even though it ends up being a phony cap hit.

Steve Yzerman's been pretty active in the NCAA free agent market. Guys like Andrej Sustr and J.T. Brown both got deals with 1.35 mil cap hits. Since most of these guys are bound by age to receive two way ELCs, teams seemingly have promised them initial time in the NHL as further enticement. That doesn't seem like a particularly Lou thing to do.

When it comes down to it, we've been fortunate to get the Rafalskis and Maddens but we can't expect the scouting staff to find some diamonds in the rough every year.

Not surprised about Olesz. He sucked, plain and simple. I thought maybe he'd work out, but nope he didn't. I don't really want anymore of these bargain bin guys anymore. Olesz, Butler, and whoever else have been failures.

Very solid points all around. It just sucks from finding a bunch of these guys to having nobody haha.

We should actually do something with our first round picks. That would be a nice start.

Like Chico said, the team just isn't hard to play against, and I couldn't word it any better. We either lack motivation, leadership or talent. I think it's a combination of the 3.

We have a good group of forwards, it's just not clicking in anyway.

Yup. He was pretty much useless on this team. Have fun in the AHL.

Where's Jim? Can he own up to being wrong about this team being successful after shedding the top 10 forward in the world anchor that is Ilya Kovalchuk and the minutes he commanded? Remember Jim pointing to Ryder's 35 goal campaign with Dallas as a sign of encouragement for the upcoming season? Good stuff

I have no idea why we're signing these chumps in the first place. Spending money and burning roster spots with guys like that just goes to show how dumb we are when trying to groom and motivate our own prospects.

Josefson and Tedenby probably cursed in Swedish for about 5 minutes when they saw that we inked Olesz to a one way deal. Both youngsters could've done what Olesz did in his short stint in NJ but we road blocked both kids for what exactly?

The same thing can be said for our blueline. Why sign these over the top veterans who are on the decline in favour of icing our rookies? Those kids need to know that management has their backs and the #1 thing you can do to show your support is to play them without benching them the following shift if they make a mistake.

God knows that our veterans are turning the puck over left and right. Management has to show some type of consistency and they need to hold everyone accountable, not just our rookies.

Hopefully this season will at least bring about an acknowledgement from the front office that the 'business as usual' method is broken. Rebuild, retool, and rethink the team building philosophy.

Note that I'm not advocating a 'rebuild' in the tanking sense. But the overall direction of the team has to change, and if that means that LL has to go, then so be it.
