i am not a big believer in PDO, but it's a good temper for +/- in sample sizes under 30 games. dustin penner's PDO is 1222. that's very high - 6th in the league, and 2nd for those with more than 5 games played. it means his team-mates - shooters and goalies - have been uniquely lucky when he's around. that probably won't last.

It's basically everything he's consistently been unable to do for a while. We'll see if he can sustain it, but it's definitely nice to see.
Damnit Penner!

Guess he just feels more comfortable with that group in Anaheim. May be proof that chemistry just means so much at that level! I'm glad he didn't just burn out though and is playing like everyone thought he could.

I'll just pretend we brainwashed him into being responsible, and that he's been reprogrammed into a scoring forward again while retaining that attribute

Weird, I was just on NHL.com and was coming here to make this thread.
GP 9 G 2 A 5 Pts. 7

Haven't watched a Ducks game but the stats look good.

Check him out on twitter, he is tweeting nonstop from the plane back to OC

Happy to see him putting all together again. I was very sceptical about him after the signing. We have to keep in mind that we have a lot of injured players, though. I wonder what would be his place if everyone would be healthy...

I was skeptical too but boy was I wrong :-) Hopefully he can keep this up through the season.

He's been pretty good since coming to Anaheim. He won't reach that same level he was at in his first stint at Anaheim and Edmonton, but if he keeps playing like he is, 15 or so goals isn't out of the question while being a pest with the body on the top line.

Shows how far chemistry with your linemates can take you (and Penner actually being motivated).

I really hope not, because that would be embarrassing. Penner wouldn't even be a finalist for me if we were looking at -just- the Ducks.

I'm happy with his play, though. I really don't expect big numbers by the time Game 82 is here, but he's been a good addition. When he's working hard, I think he helps bring a good forechecking and grinding element to that line which really complements the more skillful Getzlaf and Perry. Even if he doesn't hit much, he's got pretty good wheels(dude is a locomotive when he has the time to get chugging) and he is just so strong, with and without the puck.

I think he's having fun out there, too. I hope so. Keep chugging away, pancakes.

Ducks can get the most out of penner with a more attack minded system u nder BB. Sometimes I wonder what BB or laviollette caould do with the offensive firepower of the kings...

But best believe darryl sutter personally tattooed "backcheck" on penners arse back at the ranch in Viking Alberta...

Not trying to bash DS or DL and their hockey philosophy.

So funny last night when he made McDonagh look like a high school player.

The award is already an embarrassment.

Penner has looked great and he is skating harder then I have seen him since 07.

Yes, if you put Penner with top players, he'll bang in some garbage and be a big body, he's a perfect fit with those two. I just wouldn't praise him as a changed player until he does it for something like 50 games, rather than 9.
I don't mind people praising players this early in the season. It's really nothing more than showing off. If anything matter it's until the finals we can talk about players and the year they had.

The entire Ducks offense is playing outstanding. From Penner to Perry to Bonino to Perreault (who is becoming the best offseason move this season). Only Winnik, Cogliano and Koivu have been having medicore to poor seasons so far. Their defense has also been playing really well. Lovejoy is very underrated and Lindholm having a very solid start as a rookie.

Not really true, Winnik+Koivu have been solid, and Coglaino is having a very good season, guy has been an absolute beast defensively.

Winnik-Koivu-Cogs is basically becoming similar (minus the very physical edge) of Anaheim's 2007 shutdown line, they aren't expected to put up that many points, just match up and shut down other teams top lines.

Comes down to the continued improvement of Palms/Etem/Bonino, however if we are playing the points game, Cogs is on pace for 30, Winnik for 25 and Koivu for 20, which aren't bad numbers for them at all, Koivu will probably pick it up when healthy as well.

Anyone that's played competitive hockey will disagree that +\- is a useless stat. I used to pride myself on not being on the ice when the opposing team has scored.
Having said that..being on the ice when your team has scored even strength can be a bit lucky unless you're in on the goal somehow.
I'm sure somewhere in advanced statistics there is a more accurate way of calculating +\-. But the conventional way does indicate solid 2 way play.
I would argue that +\- is more of a defenseman and center statistic though.

A lot of players don't succeed in the King's system, Penner was just another one. Good to see him doing well on the ice, he was a fan favorite off the ice in LA, haha.

Duck fans have to thank the Kings for giving anyone a reason to take a chance on D Pen.

I am happy he has taken the solid two way play he learned as a King and is having a good start to the season. I hope he keeps it up and has a great season.

It's really upsetting how every single forward to leave the Kings as an offensive black hole magically rediscovers their scoring touch.

Not possible, unfortunately. That's like asking if Godzilla quietly destroyed Tokyo.
