Six Days to Sign '03 Draftees...

So one of the items first up for Regier is getting Clarke MacArthur inked to a deal with the big club or lose him back into the draft. With Vanek signed, no 2nd rounder that year, and several players who I am assuming are still covered under the old model CBA for Euro's and collegiate types... it basically means we will finally see if LP Martin is in their plans at all or if he's cut adrift once and for all.

A few items regarding next season's Amerk roster could be brought to the fore:

- Branislav Fabry: will they sign him and stick him in Rochester to see if they really do have Grosek II Electrikslava do on their hands?
- Dennis Ezhov: will this defenseman popular with many posters get a look in North America after getting a major pine suppository after Tikhanov's ouster from CSKA Moscow? With the Sabres general lack of blueline promise, Jillson and Janik pushing for slot(s) in Buffalo, and the likelihood of the Amerks filling in with quality AHLers... there could be room to see him in Rochester this season. Get this guy signed.
- Jan Hejda: Does over-age draftee Jan Hejda leave some success in the RSL to come stateside? Does it matter? At 27, does bringing him to the States make him into an NHLer or even a good AHLer?

Ezhov and Fabry certainly deserve a look imo, we have to sign MacAarthur though and give him a couple years in Rochester.

I wouldn't mind seeing all 5 you mentioned on Rochester next season. I'm not sure any would make the Sabres off the bat, Hejda maybe.

I don't know much of anything about Fabry, but I've read comparisons of Bartovic.

I remember reading how Hejda said if he comes to NA it's the Sabres or bust. So I'm not sure if he's an option here unless it's with Buffalo.

The Sabres also have to make decisions with Pavel Voroshnin and Jeff Weber. And I imagine the Sabres are going to quickly decline offering those two a contract.

I think this is the year Denisov gets inked. He seems to be a puck mover that could give Soupy a run for his money if he decides to make the move.

Damn right. If Darcy doesn't sign him, I'm off the Regier bandwagon.

By my count, the prospects that need to be signed to retain their rights:
John Adams ('02)
Clarke MacArthur
Pavel Voroshnin
Jeff Weber
Louis-Phillipe Martin

Does the European 2-year rule count for the '03 draft, or does it not effect the Euros until this year's draft?

Certainly Adams now that he's completed his fourth year should be given more than a casual once-over by the team brass.

As for the Euro rights rule, I have not found anything on whether it has been grandfathered in or not. With the efforts made to bring Kriukov in and his solid play for Yaroslavl, it seems like a forgone conclusion that he'll be signed. As for the others, Denisov is signed for this season in the RSL, so Regier would have to make it worth his while to come to the Amerks for a look. Ezhov should be easier to lay their hands on after the whole playing time thing with CSKA Moscow. If they're about to lose their rights to people, they might want to revisit Maxim Shevjev's status in their long-range plans.

For 2003 picks the signing deadline is June 1, 2007 and for 2004 it's June 1, 2008. Earlier picks have no deadline.

Adams will have to be signed by August 15th or he becomes an UFA.

So collegians drafted before the New Way are subject to the new deadline as well (they don't get the extra year?)?

Do we have links to these dates?

Someone mentioned that Kriukov is Sabres property until June 1, 2006, but I forget if there was a source mentioned.

It would be appreciated to see links on certain dates.

Thanks

Right, the rule goes into effect immediately for collegians. Don Waddell mentioned it at the Thrasher's press conference today. Particularly that Atlanta has to get Jim Slater signed by Aug 15th.

no?

This is the latest I've been able to find:
http://www.pittsburghpostgazette.com...202/541229.stm
Quote:
The new labor agreement classifies Malkin (pre-2005 picks) as a "defected transition player," and stipulates that teams will retain the rights to such players -- that is, Europeans drafted before 2005 -- for four years.
It isn't stated what happens to players drafted more than 4+ years ago.
Quote:
It is not known if Europeans drafted before 2002 will remain property of the NHL clubs that hold their rights or be declared free agents.
I've heard it both ways, i.e. that they become UFA's and that they continue under the old cba where their rights are held indefinitely.
