#17| New York Islanders @ Columbus Blue Jackets| November 9th | "Jack"| F/L 5-2

"Jack"

Preview

The Columbus Blue Jackets are enduring their longest losing streak in two seasons, causing coach Todd Richards to say that "the gloves gotta come off" in order to motivate his team.

New York Islanders coach Jack Capuano is looking to somehow kick-start his team's floundering power play.

The Islanders, who have gone a season-worst six straight games without a power-play goal. New York went 0 for 3 against Carolina on the power play and is 0 for 21 during a 2-4-0 stretch.

Columbus is on its longest winless stretch since a 0-5-1 skid Dec. 15-27, 2011. The Blue Jackets last dropped six in a row in regulation from Nov. 10-20, 2006.

"I didn't think we generated enough on that power play so it's something that we have to take a look at and get better at for sure," Capuano said.

Kyle Okposo amassed six points during a three-game run prior to Thursday. Only three of his team-high 19 points have come on the power play.

One player familiar to New York will be Marian Gaborik, a nemesis during his days with the Rangers. Gaborik had 18 goals and 10 assists in 20 games against the Islanders while playing for their local rivals.

Capuano has started Kevin Poulin in goal in two of the last three games, with Evgeni Nabokov getting the nod in the other one. The Islanders are 1-5-1 with one tie at Columbus.

"It's a big game and obviously they've got a pretty good team and we played them earlier and they skate and they work and we've got to match their intensity level," Capuano said.

NJ getting a point tonight. this team really needs three points out of the next two games at least or they'll find themselves in the basement shortly.

MattMartin, good work on the GDT.

Is Nabby starti ng? I would rather go with Poulin, after two solid outings.

And when is Captain JT going to get hot and go through a goal scoring stretch? I realize it is almost a crime to criticize Tavares, but Isles need him to step his goal production up.

Playing another terrible team. Can we just dominate a game? For once? Stop playing to the level of the competition. Falls on coaching.

I agree it does fall on the coaching.
Isles are past the stage of moral victories: the boys played hard, theywere in the game until the end. Ugh!

I just went with a guess on what Howie and Butch were saying about Poulin starting in Montreal possibly.

And TYVM Sir!

I'm confused as to how we were such a quality road team last year and now we are struggling mightily.

Capuano needs to righten the ship soon before this season starts to slip.

I might be grasping here but if Snow has any intention on retaining Vanek, it will be partly because the islanders are contenders. Hard to play that card if your coach is awful.

And if he doesn't then he just pissed away two draft picks, plus whatever else we could have gotten for Moulson

Time to get back on track here, let's see how these boys respond to this drought. Will our customary 10 game losing streak come a bit early this year?

Snow said himself when he made the Vanek deal that the team was underachieving. Ok, so we now have Vanek and the team is STILL underachieving. So, a trade didn't work. I'm hoping beside #2 under his list of ideas has "fire cappy and find a legit coach".

Not trying to be rude but I loved the trade on many levels so I am not worried about draft picks. We have plenty of prospects in the system and honestly I never really liked Moulson.

Problem is there is mismanagement all around and we aren't seeing the fruits of the prospect pool which in turn has people worrying about draft picks instead of winning NOW.

The move was made to win now and the potential of resigning Vanek IMO is very high a long as the Islanders start winning.

The points haven't exactly exploded from that line yet, but they have only played 5 games or so together. I wouldn't say the trade didn't work until Vanek and JT have had time to build some chemistry. So far I have seen greater dynamic play from their line, but as some have very correctly pointed out, Capuano leaves them on the ice too long, or gives them too much of the ice time pie. Tired players don't think as clearly. Getting rid of the hack ECHL coach behind the bench is the next thing that needs to happen and replace him with someone who has coached at this level (aka not Doug Weight).
Then there is the defense, and the goaltending. I don't think anyone is under the illusion that Vanek alone could fix this broken team.

Great GDT MM. Someone needs to kick the Cap out of this team.

Isles 2 Columbus 3.

This - rather than complaining, I'd rather consider the fact that Vanek is a dynamic forward, and a successful season (and killing this November slump before it's out of control) is necessary to convince this guy to stick here.

A scoring Vanek is a happy Vanek. Same with Tavares. Speaking of which, until the Islanders are winning games behind the team-leading PiM's and excruciating amounts of frustration by our captain, I don't want JT that angry. It benefits the Isles for JT & Vanek to "bro down." We want to win this trade.

Back to the game, great GDT, and the Isles need to wallop one of the few teams more frustrated than ours and aim for above .500 rather than at it.

LGI

im hoping my tooth ache is gone by face-off time tonight.......talk about fun!! i havent slept since wednesday night.........i just poured an entire teaspoon of salt between my cheek and gum to try to draw the infection out and it seems to be working. its not nearly as painful as it was 10 minutes ago. it tasted like pure hell but...........enough about my tooth, and on to more important things.......

believe it or not, im actually all for starting nabakov tonight. if he gets shelled, he gets shelled.( he also gets waived when he gets home. even if i have to hire some drunk off the street corner to serve as back-up ) but then again, at his age im willing to bet poulin could handle starting 2 games in 23 hours. ( remember gang, its a 6:00 pm start time in montreal tomorrow. so be sure to hustle home from church. )

did i atually see grabner killing penalties against carolina or were my eyes deceiving me?

Last night, I had a dream that Cizikas was traded to the Leafs and I planned on not watching the Islanders after that. No joke.

We will go 0-4 on this road trip, and Jack will have his pink slip waiting for him at home.

Hilarious GDT. Love that picture of him LOL

Awesome job I love this GDT! Staple with the lineup:

Quote:
@StapeNewsday: Capuano: Nabokov tonight, Poulin tomorrow in MTL. Boulton in, Nelson and Clutterbuck out. Ness in, Martinek out.
