What is Edmonton doing?

I know there are some discussion in the other threads.

But how does a team that has terrible defense in year (5?) of a rebuild, go out and trade for prospects (a goalie who is 4+ years away) in exchange for giving up a top 4 defenseman.

I dont mind the Bryz signing, but i seriously wonder what Lowe is doing over in Edmonton land. Seems like they are trying to tank AGAIN and get another high pick.

No one knows. TSN was saying it was to free up cap space for Bryzgalov, which would be a terrible idea, but Bryz only signed for 1.75 so the Oilers had enough money without trading Smid to begin with.

Plus if it was a cap dump they have Hemsky signed @ 5m who is a UFA next season who they won't be able to afford to sign and Nick Schultz who is a worse defenseman but makes the same amount of money as Smid.

Not happy

Really, I think the Oilers are just screwing themselves over.. They do this **** so years down the line they trade what they've been working for.. in this case they need D, desperately, and they trade their #1 in Smid and have no one in return to replace him.

Why not just bump one of your other Anti-Oil threads...

Or just bump one of the 10,000 on the board already and get your answers there?

Unless the Oilers are making a trade for a top end defenseman (like Weber) this trade really doesn't make since. Their defense needs to be fixed and then they should have a decent team.

They have no idea.

The whole organization has taken over a loser identity over the last 5 or so years

Wouldn't surprise me if there is a trade between Oilers and Flyers after the game tomorrow and they didn't want to pull the trigger before the game because there's already enough stuff happening with Bryz/Smid.

They have the worst management group in the league. They're gonna continue to be the worst team in the league until Kevin Lowe and the Old Boys leave

Freaking out? If Devan Dubnyk wasn't so completely awful this year along with the backups then this wouldnt be happening. Especially at important times of the game Dubnyk lets bad goals in.

Am glad it meant Smid going though. Hopefully he passes that physical. We have other guys just as mediocre that either make a lot less or have their contracts expiring. That means you Nick Schultz. I hate your guts but at least Smid was tradeable.

Oh and Calgary, Smid isn't going to help you out of your tailspin. If anything, he'll expedite it. See you on your way to the basement within the next couple of weeks.

In this thread: Oilers fans can't stand some simple discussion about the state of their team and everything everyone says is "kicking them while they're down".

I don't know what the Oilers are doing. I thought they took a few steps forward by adding Perron and Ference in the offseason, but the Smid trade is mind-boggling.

Most Edmonton threads you will find me backing Edmonton but WTF. These recent moves have me scratching my head. Not that I'm a fan of Smid cause I certainly am not, but its a step backwards. Maybe they've liked what they have seen in Fedun and maybe Larsen and decided to they needed to make a spot on the roster for them? Horak and Brossoit have decent potential. I liked LB as an Oil King in the WHL, but I don't see him being a starter at this level and I don't see Horak as much more than a 2nd/3rd line tweener.

Maybe the Oilers budget doesn't go right up to the cap, they do usually struggle for money I think.

They were spending to the cap while finishing last in the league.

Oilers fans: If you get mad everytime someone makes fun of your team, it's going to be a long 5-10 years for you
