The good thing, if you want to think about it, is who we DON'T have left on our schedule. I haven't compared our schedule to others in the Metro, but, we are finished against Boston, only 1 left against Pittsburgh, finished with St Louis, already went to Western Canada... (See where I'm going with this?)

There is still a California trip but that is right before the Olympic break.

So how is the 2014 NHL draft looking... any absolute stud "best since Crosby or Stamkos" type prospects? It looks Edmonton is wandering in line for yet another #1 pick... You know they'll win the coin flip.

I've read that this draft is relatively soft, especially when compared to last year and next year. But Edmonton will have another option at a defenseman or forward, so we all know where they will be heading.

The forward, obviously.

There are some excellent prospects at this year's draft, but many of them come with a question mark. Sam Reinhart could be a dominant scorer for many years to come, but how high is his ceiling? Is he a John Tavares type, or is he "just" a 70 point guy? Aaron Ekblad is as good a defense prospect as anyone else to come along in the last handful of years, but, like with many of the others, does his game translate?

Really, it's very similar to last summer's draft - you have a forward and a defenseman at the top (similar to MacKinnon and Jones), followed up by a handful of guys that every team will value differently. Should be exciting - but don't expect any generational players to come out of this year's crop.

Headline from tsn

"Pavelski has pair as Sharks beat Red Wings in chippy affair"

What, did he go with Bertuzzi?

With a couple of exceptions, I agree with your sentiments. This looks a lot like the 1999 draft, where there's a lot of question marks on the top guys and the safe picks seem to be lower-ceiling types.

Even the guys who I really like have big question marks. Anthony DeAngelo (Sarnia Sting) may end up as a younger version of Mike Green, but I think there's a better chance that he ends up as Marc-Andre Bergeron or Andy Delmore. And that's someone I have in the top 15, probably in the top 10.

So Columbus gets it's finances settled (for now), the Phoenix issue is solved (for now), Nashville is healthy (for now), etc.

What next? Looks like the Florida Panthers. Who didn't see this coming.

Quote:
The struggling team is asking for a rewrite of its contract with Broward County. Under the team's proposal, the county would use additional tourism taxes to pick up $70 million in BB&T Center costs currently being paid by the Panthers. The team also hopes to develop 22 acres north of the BB&T arena in Sunrise into a casino-hotel, if the state Legislature enacts laws that allow it this spring.

Panthers President Michael Yormark said the deal that birthed the arena in the late 1990s has proven unsustainable.

"I think the community wants a healthy arena,'' Yormark said. "They want a healthy sports team. They want the benefit that a professional sports team and world-class entertainment brings to their community.''
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/bro...120,full.story

Looks like the owner would like an Arena district like we have. Who wouldn't? The District has been a real feather in our caps, and something that other NHL cities want to copy.

So far the owner has not threatened to relocate.

IMO, no superstar level talent in the 2014 draft, as SL said Reinhart could put up 1st line points, but when I see him play I think Spezza not Tavares.

The 2015 draft on the other hand is looking like its 2005 v2.0. McDavid looks like the "next one" and Jack Eichel is looking like he may actually give him a run for his money. (as someone on the board has already said, I would do terrible, terrible things to get either on the jackets).

The Dispatch reports, this morning, that the ballot issue on undoing the Arena deal will probably be put to a vote, though the legal fight will go on for years, should it pass.

Thought they said you can't put it to vote because its already 2 years into a contract.

If it does, then that's not good news at all.

No, they suggest that, if it passed, it would be unenforceble. That would probably be the eventual outcome of the legal challenge; but, in the meantime, it's supporters could point to the results of the vote as representing the will of the people. I suspect that those who never have accepted Columbus as a hockey market would have a field day with that!

They were obnoxious the entire game. Whining about calls, screeching about every half-chance generated by the Flyers...really wish the NHL would spend the $$$ and hire their own announcers for their own network instead of tapping into homer coverage.

Agreed. Especially when it comes to in game replays/highlights ... instead of showing them, you get the audio but none of the video ... it's replaced by previews of other games coming up on the NHL Network. Maybe it's because of the sponsors of the highlight/replay footage? Either way, it helps ruin the game.

Caps gets a loser point today BUT they could have had two points. Late in the game, Miller made a game saving save on Grabovski. Then in the final minute, the Caps thought they scored but there was a delayed penalty. The building was loud so noone heard the whistle right before the defensemen slapped one past Miller.

Islanders win with 3 goals in the last 5 minutes. So, I guess no one in the Metro is going to lose anymore.
