Who else want Belfour gone?

Is there anyone else that really wants the Leafs to buy out Belfour's contract? I love the guy, but is there any real... smart... reason other than some emotional attachment to keep the guy?

Considering his age, injury risk, contract, and potential free agent options out there... I really hope JFJ considers buying his contract out. What's better over the long term... keeping Belfour, or signing Khabby?

And please spare me the loyality non-sence. We are in the age of a salary cap, and tough decisions need to be made... no one on any NHL team is safe.

I have no interest in seeing Belfour leave the Leafs. His age does scare me a little but he has proven to be an excellent goaltender for us and he has experienced no significant injuries as a Leaf. If the Leafs were to buy out Belfour, I would hope that it would be with the intent of re-signing him at a reduced price.

I have mixed feelings on this issue I wouldn't be up set if he left and I wouldn't be upset if he stays. I guess what is really swaying me is his hefty contract. I think there is potentially many differetn options the Leafs could benifit from in buying him out. What ever JFJ decides will be fine with me. If he decides to keep him that is good for me because that shows they still have a lot of confidence in him and see him worth every penny that he is signed for.

if you buy-out a player, you can't resign them.

I would like to buy him out, if we could land Khabby or Weekes

Wanting Belfour back has nothing to do with emotional attachment or loyalty. The guy's only been a Leaf for two seasons.

The only reason people want him back is because we're not going to find a better goalie to replace him. In fact if he still plays like he did last season, he's still a top 5 goalie in the NHL.

You ask what's better keeping Belfour or signing Khabibulin. What makes you think we can just automatically sign Khabibulin? What if he signed somewhere else? Then what?

It honestly wouldn't bother me if they bought out everyone other than Sundin. As for buying out Belfour then re-signing him at a lower price, it's not allowed. Once a team buys a player out they can not play for that team again for at least a year. They can't be traded for, signed by or claimed off of waivers by the team that bought them out.

With Belfour we have a goalie that'll play 50 - 60 games. Tellqvist will play the rest and we may find out if he may be a decent starter.

Keep him for 1 more year for sure, judge his play, and if he has a solid season, and wants to continue, sign him up for another year.

Have not bothered to read over the rules on this yet. What I will say then is that the Leafs should not buy out Belfour unless they are sure that they will be able to find a goalie that can fill his shoes. The only one I can see on the market so far is Khabibulin... If Belfour can still like he did when the Leafs last played, then I would prefer that they stick with him.

How much time is left on Belfour's contract? Cause I also agree with the guy that said wait till the end of the season. It kind of worries me that he hasn't played for a year, but he is a veteran that not only proves him self in the net, but his charisma rubs off onto the rest of the team (much like any star or veteran). I'm worried that he'll be bought out, but I hope he stays.

Only instance I would consider buying out Belfour was if we could sign Khabibulin.

No Way. Belfour will do great this year. Finalist for Vesina. I have been very right about him for years.

Exactly. Other than that I do not see an alternative. Belfour is our go to guy for the next season. I hope the year off does more good than bad. But it's a toss up.

Definately have to keep him around. Too much of a gamble buying him out and then looking to the UFA/trade market where the goalies/teams available know they have the negotiating advantage. There are no guarantees there either.

Thats not to say Ferguson shouldnt be thinking about who we're going to have in net post-Belfour...maybe make a mid-season trade..

The leafs Lunch guys said that many teams are interested in Khabby .

In fact they said his asking price is 20% player max ..

So dumping Eddie does not free up space it actually eats up 2.3 extra space if you end up winning the UFA bidding ..

The only reason getting rid of Eddie makes any sense to me is if you are getting both younger and cheaper at the same time .. There is nothing on the UFA market to do that so it would require a trade in the process ..

So now you are buying out Eddie and trading an asset to make this all happen ..

You better be pretty sure you know what your doing to make this move because you are taking a huge gamble ..

To me Eddie can stay ..I have no problem with that ..

I completely agree to everything you just said! You know, I'm skeptical that he missed a season of playing, but it could have beena good thing because it really lets the injuries heal better and that way you aren't rushing anything.

personally, I want eddie back for a year at least.

He's proven to be healthy, work horse with great work ethics... a few fluke injuries and wonky back aren't sufficient reasons to bump him for a maybe signing.

He's proven he still has it... he's been a winner his entire career and will continue to be.

LL has something against Sundin. I don't understand what though. The guy is Mr. Clutch.

And when the NHL continues this next season he'll become the 3rd leading point-getter in Leafs history.

Makes good sence. If Khabby is going to go for that much I am not interested anyways. Are you sure there are no other younger cheaper goalies available who could possibly do the job. I know I may get flamed but what about Dan Cloutier. He is younger and cheaper and even though he is not a proven playoff goalie he is always good in the regular season and might still be a reasonable option. Could you possibly make a list of UFA goalies.
