Montreal needs a top 6 sniper with size(or at the very least grit), few untouchables.

that would be a lateral move tho, we would probably have to give up more and then we'd still have a hole on one of our wings. i would rather fill that hole while maintaining our core forwards

valuewise its already been said in previous proposals that beaulieu+ for simmonds and stewart+ for plek would work

Getting rid of Pacioretty and getting Brouwer would not be a later move, it would be taking a step backwards.

someone like oshie comes to mind, im not asking for him specifically but we would like someone that plays a similar style as oshie/gallagher/marchand etc.
Brouwer was mentioned. Not really a finisher, but he's got size and a fair amount of jam in his game. Perhaps he'd be a fit.

no point in trading for brouwer if were gonna use him in our top 6, getting brouwer only makes sense if he replaces bourque on our 3rd line, he has good 2 way play and can add offense. if we wanted to add him in our top 6 i would just rather keep bourque, the problem is that hes not a legit top 6 and we need more of a shutdown presence on our 3rd line. we have too many soft, fringe top 6'ers that dont add much when theyre not producing and they take alot of icetime away from our top 6 players. (the good ol' politics of hockey, veterans have to get their icetime regardless..)

on top of that we need a legitimate top 6 winger aswell, i mean we could always throw a ****ton of money at vanek and pray that he signs with us but thats not a very reliable strategy. if he does then plekanec becomes expendable due to us having 2 LW'ers (pacioretty, vanek) and eller + galchenyuk as our centers, we could trade him for someone like stewart and roll with:

vanek - galchenyuk - gallagher
pacioretty - eller - stewart

prust - bournival - xxxxxxx
moen - white - xxxxxxxx

but realistically the easiest/cheapest fix for us would be to trade beaulieu+ for simmonds and then we could go with:

galchenyuk - plekanec - gallagher
pacioretty - eller - simmonds
prust - bournival - xxxxxxxx
(adding kuli here makes sense because we could alternative him and simmonds)
moen - white - xxxxxxxx

I never said Pacioretty FOR Brouwer.

I'd love Brouwer on the team but obviously not at the cost of Pacioretty. Pacioretty being traded would have to bring back a legit top six forward with grit and can produce consistently, even if it means adding more than just Pacioretty (depending on the piece).

Honestly, not good. He's lost a step, and is on LTIR at the moment. Hopefully the poor play to start the year was related to the injury and he'll be better when he returns, but the guy's 33 so you never know. He comes with intangibles - the guys called him the leader on the blueline last year. Healthy, he's a capable #5 or a below average #4 (as he was last year for the Caps).

I'd be happy to get Chiasson but would offer up Pleks and keep JT

Or Pleks to the Ducks for Etem

Then take a run at a cheaper 3C like Brian Boyle as a UFA to pick up Pleks defence

We need a big RW more than we need a $5MM 3rd centre as good as Tomas is

A sniper with size is rarely ever available and they require massive overpayment to acquire. The only ones that are available are washed up and declining (Clowe).

Actually it's not. The Habs have been in need of a 1st line center with size and skill forever. Kane would be great to have, but not at the cost of Galchenyuk.

If we want a top 6 winger with size, our best bet is to wait for the summer and use Plekanec as the return. Pleks is a great 2nd Line C, which is highly coveted, and my guess is by the summer, Eller will have proven himself capable of filling that role and that Galchenyuk will be ready to step in as a Centre as well. If anyone thinks Desharnais can be traded.....we can all dream right? But likele he stays, and not waived as that saves only 925K on the cap. So he is our defacto 3rd line C.

I'd rather take the $1.17MM cap hit the next 6 years on a buyout than try and shelter him for 3 more years

But my point was that if we want to land a good sized top 6 winger, we need to use Plekanec in the trade

Eller and Galchenyuk are the core C's for our future top 6 and no one wants DD.

So if you want quality, you need to offer quality. That was my point

Habs will have to do it on the UFA market, trading for somebody else's "lost cause" salary dump and hoping for a resurrection, or via finding somebody "overlooked"... they don't have enough assets to be able to actually trade for an established scoring PF.

So basically you're saying, give us a great top 6 sniper with size (rare to see) and we won't give you guys anything with value?

Have to give to get.
