I'd rather see Gonchar with Kaberle or McCabe.

Just out of curiosity, how many players that are at least 2nd liners AREN'T rumoured to come here?

2 or 3 perhaps?

At the rate this is going we'd have to sign about 30 stars just to satisfy a quarter of the rumours.

I will be happy if a handfull of the rumors pan out. JFJ should sign everone who wants to come here two a 1 year contract all at 1.5 million with bonus incentives win the cup and rebuild the team arround newly aquired Thornton and Pronger .

And Modano comes out and says something about playing with Hull in Phoenix, which would have to come with a discount on the salary front, so yet another player talking about non money factors influencing his decision.

I heard Tanenbaum likes to dabble in the real estate business. Perhaps he might see Gonchar's home as a great capital investment and offer him $2 million more than market value for it.

Why not just buy him a house as a gift afterwards.

That's probably what's happening.

Rumours are the off-season (and often in-season) recreation of loyal fans. Reality is not the issue here, enthusiasm is, and I see little harm and much pleasure in engaging in these what-if scribblings even if some of them go way beyond pipe dreams and pie-in-the-sky to the level of off-the-wall. Relax and watch the fun.

bruins offer gonchar 4 yr contract

Boston Bruins General Manager Mike O'Connell today made contract offers to several of the team's restricted and unrestricted free agents.

O'Connell offered Joe Thornton a five-year contract. Sergei Gonchar was tendered a four-year deal. Sergei Samsonov, P. J. Axelsson and Martin Lapointe were made three-year contract offers.

"These players have made valuable contributions to our team," said O'Connell. "We hope these offers make clear to them how much we want them to be a part of building a championship team in Boston."

Thornton, Samsonov and Axelsson are restricted free agents. Gonchar and Lapointe are unrestricted free agents. Teams have an exclusive window to negotiate with their own free agents through July 31.

Other upcoming, important dates of note are Sat., July 30 for the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, and Mon., Aug. 1, which is the first day of unrestricted free agency. The 2005-06 NHL season opens on Wed., Oct. 5 with all 30 teams in action.

Gonchar isn't lost just yet. Like joe said, Gonchar could turn it down if he really wanted to come to the Leafs. We'll see.

Gonchar said on TV that he wanted to win a cup and Toronto was a good place to do it...

Long term deals is the new currency of the new CBA. I would not be too sure that these offers will not be very appealing, assuming big bucks are attached.

Some players seem to be more interested in going to a competing team now as opposed to money, ie. Gonchar, Modano.

A luxury of some players for being pathetically overpaid for the past 8 years. Good work if you can find it.
