In almost every single trade out there, there's a team trading quality, and a team giving away spare parts/futures.

How often do we see star players swaps?

2 years ago Healtey was traded for Havlat, but yeah, it is rare.

It makes sense for Montreal to be trying to make a trade.

The team has too many forwards and too many defencemen. They also have Louis Leblanc in the AHL who could play NHL minutes fine on the bottom six.

They are in a great position to package multiple players for a single player. The problem is that a lot of the guys expected to be packaged are Habs players with low value. Ignore the people offering Gionta and Briere. It's more about Desharnais, Murray, Bouillon and Bourque. Travis Moen, who had low value going into the season, has been very good this season and his value is quite high. Any team looking for a workhouse penalty killer for their bottom six in the post-season would love him. Diaz could get dealt in a package if he's asking for too much in his next deal.

In other words, I could see a package involving Moen and Diaz, two players with definite value packaged with a guy like Bourque, who carries a cap hit. In return Montreal would be getting a guy between $4-6M on the cap hit. A three for one kind of deal.

But the whole "Scraps for Gold" thing is your usual HFBoards proposal.

They certainly might, but what has Kane done to prove he's a better player than Ryan? Ryan isn't exactly old, and has multiple 30 goal seasons to his credit.

If we had one, I'm sure we wouldn't be shopping him around. If you think you can go to the market to get one, you'll probably have to trade half your team, and I'm not willing to do that. So we have to be patient, draft well and bring these guys along."

Be surprising for Columbus to give up on him so early but he'd be the type of guy I think Montreal would go for. A player who they could swap multiple bodies for.

Have you not read the "Gaborik isn't interested in re-signing with Columbus" thread? He's out another 4 weeks or so though so he's not being traded any time soon.

very true.

In regards to the original post, Ottawa traded 2 mid-level prospects and a 1st round draft pick in exchange for a legit 1st line forward.

Montreal can pull off something similar considering their deep prospect pool.

Unless CBJ was willing to take some serious salary back, its not gonna be Gaborik...

also I cant see MB giving up the assets for a high priced UFA to be.

It's about trade value and current market value. Do I think the Ducks could've got more for him? Yes. That's exactly what I want Chevy to do.

How often do we actually see teams trading and making a "big splash" as well.

Clearly the rumor is Subban to the Leafs for Bozak and a 2nd....maybe a conditional first.

We can send Bergevin Ryder... so that we can try and re-live the legendary trade proposals of Ryder + pick + Halak.

Damn, if they only had a legit backup that they would be willing to move.

This could be why Montreal has been scouting Colorado intensely.

Ottawa will take Murray off your hands if you take our Murray off of our hands.

Not sure about last game but they've had scouts at Colorado nearly all year. More than the norm for scouts. Having a tough time imagining what would be swapped unless "big splash" means untouchable for untouchable
