Also, I suspect Klesla was waived in hopes that he'd be claimed.
I agree, I think DM had something else going on if RK was claimed.

To clear up a roster spot? Unload a contract? Lower payroll? And not knowing if your actions would be worth winning the claim? And all this in just a 24 hour period. I'm sure GMDM looked at other rosters of the bottom few teams and knew they had enough depth at their blueline regardless if they could use an injured Klesla. While top teams would be a virtual gamble if they needed to clear a spot. I just don't believe the Coyotes were actively shopping Klesla before he was waived. However, they are in buying mode. Maloney did not tip his hand before Klesla was waived.

I look at this as an extended rehab assignment. The Coyotes can use a 100% healthy Klesla for the playoffs, but they are actively pursuing a forward(s).

We are at out budget limit. There is no acquiring a forward at the deadline without moving salary.

You're essentially arguing the same point of me.

Appreciate the unsolicited shot at the Oilers. Really helps the discussion along.
You really don't know what the word want means do you?

We all believe this to be true. Yet Maloney essentially upped the budget when he sent Klesla and his $3M salary down to Portland and increased us from Murphy's AHL to NHL salary. It's not a lot, but that's an increase every day that it stays that way.

The team still has to pay Klesla... only now they're paying him to play in Portland. There is no extra money found here. They now have less money than they did before. If there was room before, we're cutting into it.

Klesla can be a very effective player. As Phoenix's youngsters have stepped forward Klesla has fallen down the depth chart. At his salary he's overpaid as a 5/6 guy but he is still capable of being a Top 4 guy on another team. He could be a very good option down the road for another team near the deadline or a call up option for Phoenix for injuries and/or playoff depth.

I saw a lot of people saying that he'll probably be an Oiler, why wouldn't Buffalo claim him? Cap? Too many D?

EDIT: Maybe he'll play a little worse and get sent down to Gwinnett, GO GLADS!

He said on the radio last night, that we're pretty much at our limit for what we can we spend.

Don't this usually happen when they are about to get traded?
Maybe trade for another struggling player with similar cap hit?
Or trade with salary retained?

Do they have to call him back up to trade him?

snow probably didnt claim him because capuano told him he was fine with his current defensive core even though klesla would be a perfect fit

And we're right back to my original post.

Semantics.

No one wanted him badly enough to move the pieces necessary to get him. Better?

Still means that interest in him wasn't all that high.

Wow... not the best year for Klesla but he's pretty good and term ends this year. Weird no one would take a shot.

As a coyotes fan, I don't really care if the rest of the world undervalues Klesla. I have a lot of confidence in him and am glad to keep him. He was our best player in the play-offs two years ago other then Smith, and I'm pretty sure he will bring it again this year if we get that far (we will) He is a good locker room guy, sticks up for his team-mates, plays solid D generally, and is very capable up jumping into the offence when opportunity shows itself. All he needed was to get dialed in a little and I'm sure he is after this. Now we can look forward to him proving everyone one else wrong. Welcome back Rusty!!

#Coyotes D Rusty Klesla cleared waivers. GM Don Maloney's gamble pays off.

Maybe it is possible that Maloney hoped he wouldn't get claimed. He did say in an interview during the Coyotes vs. Wild game that he needs Rusty Klesla to play like Rusty Klesla, that they need a player like him.

Maloney also said that the move was a "shot against the bow." Well, a message was sent and I'm sure it was received by the entire team, not just Klesla, that if you don't perform we have more than enough depth to replace you in the lineup.

Klesla has now seen that a) the Coyotes are willing to demote, trade, or even give away a player (even a veteran) if they aren't playing their assigned role well enough. b) no one picked him up for free. The latter has to be a big hit to his pride and the thought that he could be playing in the AHL right now, without the luxuries of the NHL, must have been a huge wake up call.

The huge amount of goals scored from our D is great and all, but when you give up way too many GPG Tippet knows things are going to come crashing down on them. They've been trying to get a better Tippet style defensive game going since the beginning of the season and the team hasn't responded. Maybe this will do the trick!

Hopefully he finds a way to change what has brought him to this point.

With Robidas' injury, does Nill make a move for Klesla?
