I'm not sure, but one thing is - these lines will never happen.

2nd one by a mile.

Who's going to backcheck and forecheck on the Kovy-Geno-Ovie line? You also have a puck hog and 2 pylons who will wait around for passes.

It seems to me you just put the best players on each team together and thought that it would be enough?

The Russia line can't play defense at all. I think Stamkos=Ovie, Crosby>Malkin, Tavares>Kovie.

Besides Datsyuk, the entire top 6 forward core of the Russians can't/don't play defense at all. This is what so many posters are failing to understand.

Even if Crosby and Ovechkin put up the same numbers, you'd want Crosby every time simply because he is far better defensively. He actually backchecks. Far too many people are looking at forwards and ONLY looking at the offensive side the of the game and saying "Oh, well the Russian Forwards score 'X' goals...". The top Canadian forwards are just as good offensively as the Russians but FAR better defensively.

This is also why Stamkos > Ovechkin now in the NHL. Stamkos has actually learned to play a 200' game... Ovechkin still floats around.

Canada's trio. I think it's closer than some posters will give it (Malkin can play defense), but beyond that the skill level of the Russians is also pretty insane. Canada has Crosby, which is already a pro, as is having Stamkos' shot, but having a guy like JT who thinks the game on such a high level makes me think that would be an even more natural pairing with Crosby. Still, Kunitz is going to occupy one of those slots.

I'd think Kovalchuk would actually do a better job at LW than Tavares in Sochi, since he's been playing there his whole life whereas Tavares would only get 1 practice in there before the Games start. Geno and Kovalchuk are also miles better defensively now than they were back in 2010.

So:

Kovy > Tavares (at LW)
Malkin = Crosby
OV > Stamkos

Give me the Russian trio. Flame away.

I can't believe the results of this poll

Let's see:

Malkin = Crosby (or Crosby by a very very small margin)
Ovechking>>>Stamkos
Tavares > Kovalchuk (and really not by much)

So i don't see how Canada's top line is so much better than Russia's top line

Kovalchuk didn't have a great year last year and now Brandon Bochenski, Nigel Dawes and Kyle Wilson are all having better seasons than him in the KHL. Based on his current play he is a step below all of the guys listed in this poll.

Stamkos has both more goals and points per game this season than Ovy, so:

Crosby > Malkin
Stamkos > Ovechkin
Tavares >> Kovalchuk

Usually I'd easily take the Canadians but with JT not on his position, the Stammer injury and the bigger ice I would take the russian line for Sochi.

Come on now, Stamkos is not better than Ovechkin. Very clear edge to OV, a handful of games this season not withstanding.

How can Ovechkin be so much better than Stamkos? In which world is that obvious?

Please explain what is the clear edge you're talking about? Stamkos has had very good numbers for a handful of years. The last time Ovechkin had more points than Stamkos was back in 2009-2010. The notion that Stamkos is better than Ovechkin is not that outlandish.

3 Hart trophies to none? Beat Stamkos for the Richard last year despite Stamkos playing on a line with the Ross winner? They are both primarily goalscorers and Ovechkin is simply better in this regard.

bingo. I'm not surprised that Canada is winning this poll, but the results should not be this lopsided

At present day I believe:
Crosby > Malkin
Stamkos > OV
JT > Kovalchuk

But give me a prime OV and Kovalchuk and it's tough call.

I don't think Ovechkin deserved the Hart last season. This year is even worse. Stamkos can score without St-Louis. It's true Ovechkin is a better goalscorer but the gap is getting smaller. My only concern with Stamkos is his injury. If healthy, I'd take Stamkos over Ovechkin.

Stamkos is better than Ovechkin and has been for a couple years now.

Defensively they aren't even close. Stamkos is miles ahead of Ovechkin defensively.

Of course Canadians would be delusional in picking Stamkos over Ovechkin.
