Ryan Suter - 9.5
Andrew Hutchinson - 4 (Only if injury to d-man going into season)

Darren Haydar - 4
Shea Weber - 3 (Only with dominant preseason and/or d-man injury going into season)

Wouldn't it be something if Weber came in and wowed the pants off everyone...and made the team?

speaking of the admirals...did anyone notice poiles comments concerning one of the new items contained in the cba about european players?...basically one new provision says that if a player who has a contract with a european team is brought over, and he plays less than 30 games in the nhl, that the parent club owes a portion of his salary as a penalty back to the european club....so bottom line is that it makes it more difficult to bring a guy over to compete in the AHL to develop...this rule might have prevented us from bringing shishkanov or pivko over for example....and poile is admitting it is making him think about his stated intention of bringing rinne, widing, and setzinger to milwaukee next year....which personally i don't like at all..

makes you think that the number of europeans playing in the ahl will decline dramatically...which i also don't think would be a good thing for the nhl overall

Yeah, I noticed that...and something doesn't sound quite right. It would basically spell the end of European goalies in the NHL. Then again...if we had to pay a portion of Pekka Rinne's salary...it's my understanding these guys aren't making a whole lot of money in there. "Star" players might make 2 or 300,000...but that's stretching it. Would we not be willing to pay, say....20,000....to bring Setzinger over? I guess all we can do is wait and see, but it could certainly draw our focus toward drafting North American players whenever possible.

The solution comes down to coordination and being absolutely sure that you will bring he lad over to North America. He just cannot have a contract with a team in Europe so you'd have to assure his agent that he will get his time in the States/Canada, he just has to not sign with a Euro team to come over and develop his skilz to the NA style.

Hutchinson

Wow, I'm suprised Hutchinson is being rated so low. He had a great year in Milwaukee; I saw him play a few games when he came to town in Chicago and I was farely impressed. At 6'2", he isn't short for a d-man.

Whats holding him back? I know there is a logjam on defense but it seems like his performance would give him the inside track.

Hm, I think those numbers reflect judgement on "name" basis alone. To be honest...a guy like Jerred Smithson has more of a shot to make the team in a fourth line role than a guy like Shishkanov does...who really won't be effective if he's not on the top two lines. Also, Kevin Klein is probably closer than Hutchinson at this point, in terms of playing a well-rounded game. Yablonski should also be considered, if McKenzie isn't brought back.

I'm still a rookie here but I wanted to give this one a shot ...

Ryan Suter - 9.5 (only an injury will keep ryan out of Nashville)
Andrew Hutchinson - 5 (andy delmore clone? trade him now)
Simon Gamache - 6 (could be an asset in "new" NHL)
Libor Pivko - 4 (is he as valulable with the new rule changes?)
Scottie Upshall - 6 (healthy until proven injured)
Timofei Shishkanov - 3 (overrated ... should explore his trade value)
Kevin Klein - 2 (needs more time to grow)
Darren Haydar - 1 (needs an unexpected growth spurt)
Shea Weber - 1 (makes the team out of camp ... in 2006)
Vernon Fiddler - 3
Paul Brown - 1
Brandon Segal - 1
Cam Severson - 1
Jerred Smithson - 6 (what's his story? i need more info on him)
Wyatt Smith - 3
Jeremy Yablonski - 1
Greg Zanon - 1

If I recall last year correctly, Trotz had some VERY positive things to say about Smithson, and figured to use him as a 4th line center had the season started as scheduled.

If I recall correctly, Trotz said what he liked about Smithson was that he is big and strong and good at faceoffs. IMO perfect for a 4th liner on our team.
