I don't see how Volchenkov doesn't get amnestied next summer, now that we have owners who actually have some cash.

And Salvador shouldn't be on this team next year but he probably will be. That contract was a year too long and hes really not necessary anymore.

Zids won't be back next year. Lou gave Peters, Visnevski, Boulton, Barch, Brunner, and Janssen two-year deals but only gave Zidlicky a one-year deal. The tells me a lot.

Fayne won't be back, he's going to walk. Likely to Boston.

That leaves:
Greene (1 year remaining, UFA)
Larsson (RFA)
Gelinas (RFA)
Merrill (2 years remaining, RFA)
Salvador (1 year remaining, UFA)
Volchenkov (2 years remaining, UFA)
Harrold (1 year remaining, UFA)

7 defensemen. Harrold we can easily bury in the minors, and we still have one compliance buyout available.

Please don't let Larsson's age confuse you, he already has +120 games of NHL experience. That's a quarter of Andy Greene's career before age 22.

C'mon now, let's be logical here.
Midseason call up.

Why couldn't he? I've been readin on these boards since the summer that Merrill would spend the entire year in the AHL and that Boucher would need at least two seasons down.

Severson is dominating right now. If he goes to Albany next year the way Merrill did he'll likely follow the same career path.

What happened to Vishnevski? He signed for a three year deal I believe, but he didn't come back after the first year. Did we buy him out? I don't remember hearing about us buying him out, but something happened cause he never played in the NHL again after that one year with us.

And I don't think we bring back Zidlicky next year. Although I wouldn't be opposed to another one year deal.

It appears Vishnevski was Olesz'd or Olesz was Vishnevskied.

Waived and voided his contract to go play in the KHL.

We loaned him to a KHL team.

there's no room for him now or in the next few years. I doubt he serves as anything more than the 7th in the next 3 years.

Many people did not expect Merrill to be on this team but here he is playing 20 min a game.
That isn't necessarily a good thing. Larsson was playing 20 minutes a game right out of the gate, and I think his developed suffered for it.

It's like you didn't even read my post or something.

Lou throws around multi-year deals like Geno Smith throws interceptions, especially to garbage players in UFA, yet he specifically didn't give one to Zidlicky. That should tell you something.

Lou's already got a million vet defensemen signed beyond this year and a bunch of kids that were clearly ready. I doubt him signing Zidlicky to a one-year deal was any kind of indication how he felt about him as opposed to the realization that there'd be no room soon enough between all the guys signed through next year (Greene/Sal/Volch/Larsson) and the kids coming up (Gelinas/Merrill/Severson). Plus Zidlicky's 36, let's get real.

Tells you exactly that. Lou say Zids would be useful this year as the kids were no guarantee this early and we would need blue line offense.

The one year is knowing that by next year we have the young horses ready to make him expendable and that is definitely looking to be the case.

I don't really think so. Maybe last year his development stalled. But I think it was best to have Larsson under Robinson.

yea I agree, Larsson seems like he's very sensitive and gets frustrated with himself very easily, the slower we take it with him the better

the other guys seem to be able to handle the pressure with ease , especially Merrill. I can't believe how smart he is in our end, he keeps expoiting the other team when they go for a line change with his crazy bank passes, Nieds and Martin were pro's at that

I just posted on the Larsson thread on the trade board and someone said it here. It's not realistic to have 6 similarly aged D prospects end up as the 6 starters. Lou needs to pick the best FOUR, trade two for picks or forward prospects, and work the trade wire and UFA for veteran leader D... like PHANEUF. I wish Pitkanen was healthy...

Phaneuf-Larsson
Gelinas-Pitkanen
Merill-Severson

I like our current defense with a healthy Larsson more than that group.

Don't fix what ain't broke.
