Islanders may be interested in John-Michael Liles.

Darren Dreger was on the radio just now (around 6:20 PM).

Dreger says Garth Snow will not be satisfied with another high draft pick, given what he gave up to bring in Thomas Vanek. He says that the Isles may need a puck moving defenceman and they may be interested in John-Michael Liles.

Liles and a 1st for a 3rd round pick sounds good.

Would make more sense for the Isles to go for Gleason.

I'm gonna hate myself for asking this: But, exactly what did Dreger say?

Probably his typical "It is believed that...."

No, I think they should go out and get Liles. A defense pair of Ness and Liles would strike fear into the big forwards of the eastern conference.

The Isles have the smallest, softest defense that I can remember.

Liles is a NHL Calibre defensemen. If you take him off our hands at say 50% retained Salary, (1.7mil Cap hit) he is going to seem like a steal. He's pretty much going to be your Streit replacement.

Liles@50% for 7th round pick is fair. Toronto does not have much leverage here. But the Isles defense is terrible so I guess maybe they could get a 5th out of Snow.

Please end this Liles saga... I'd do it for a late round pick.

If we retain some salary, upgrade the pick to whatever.

The Isles Isles need grit. Liles doesn't fit.

It's a little late for that now. If Vanek couldn't bring the team more wins I don't see much on the trade market (that they can afford) turning their season around. They need at least two NHL caliber defensemen and a goaltender to turn their season around. It will also more than likely take a coaching and systems change. They can't kill penalties, they don't score on the powerplay nearly as much as they should and they can't beat Eastern Conference teams. Short of hiring Ken Hitchcock for the remainder of the season there is no quick fix for them.

I don't understand the whole JML situation.

Before he was injured the guy looked like a legit top pairing D. He had his defensive short comings but his skating ability, vision and offensive game were extremely high. He was also a shot blocking machine.

JML pre-concussion: 21 points in 34 games (~51 point pace)
JML post-concussion: 6 points in 33 games (~15 point pace)

By all accounts, he's absolutely dominating the AHL. He's producing at a pretty high level, but apparently his defensive game is pretty good. He's a great guy in the room and a natural leader. The type of guy character person anyone would love to have on their team.

I really want to see Liles play in the NHL this season. Hopefully he's recovered from his concussion and is able to regain form. I don't think he'll ever be the top pairing guy he once was, but I do think he can be an effective OFD who is not a complete liability out there.

There is next to no doubt in my mind that he's good enough to be a top 6D on a lot of NHL teams currently, his contract is the issue though. Until he proves he can be at least a consistent NHL D, his contract looks really bad...but I think the guy should get an opportunity. Whether that opportunity is with the Leafs for a few games, or he's traded, I hope (and truly do think) he'll do well to at least some extent.

EDIT: 14 points (4 goals, 10 assists) and a plus 12 rating in 15 AHL games for Liles so far this year. He's been absolutely dominant, and not just statistically. Great locker room guy too. It's a shame he has such a large cap hit, wouldn't be surprised if he ended up being a legit 2nd pairing, PP guy for a team if moved.

I don't know why he isn't being played, he's not a bad dman. I'd go with this

Phaneuf-Gunnar
Gardiner-Franson
Liles-Fraser

Rielly
And have a rotation of Rielly, Franson and Liles going. Play whoever plays well

I wonder if Dreger would be willing to get into management or coaching.

Dreger is just emberrising himself now--he has his brother in law trying to help move a player that no one wants

I personally think that the trade to Carolina for Gleason would be better, but if we were able to get a prospect like De Haan who is struggling but could become something eventually with maybe a 7th or something, I'd be more than happy.

Rogers owning the NHL rights only means more Leafs coverage. They own the team after all.

Dreger's job is to get you to listen to him and get you to watch him on TV. That drives up the ratings, TSN charges more for advertisements, and his employer is happy.

In this case, he has come out with a dumb speculative statement, gotten everybody to pay attention to him, and talk about him. I'll bet anything that his suggestion that the Isles might want Liles will drive half the Leaf fans on this board wild with hope.

Seems like he is just good at his job.
