Johan Davidsson

I just checked the NHL Waiver draft list that was posted today:
http://nhl.com/onthefly/news/2003/10/152128.html

and under the Vancouver Canucks on the available list, I see Johan Davidsson. I havn't heard about him for a few years, but I would like to have some info on him. Is there a chance that he can play for the Canucks in the NHL or no?

Perhaps, he might go. He has something to put on the table for many teams, he is very skilled, especially defensivly. But it's not very likely, he tried North America in 98-99 but didn't do too well. Now he's one of the biggest stars in the Swedish Elite League, 27 years old and probably among the highest payed in the league. I don't think he will give that up just for some two way contract.

He has expressed a desire to play in the NHL in the future and I think that he has the tools to make it.

Do you think he will sign a two-way contract?

That is of course the main question. I don't see the canucks as the ideal team for him. They have far too much depth and Swedes as it is. An expansion team signing him to a one-way contract would probably be the ideal situation.

yes, but it's not like the pens had a too deep roster for Mathias Johansson...

Davidsson has it all except a strong physical game. That's a shame but he still brings a lot to the table. I personally think he would be a solid NHLer (3rd-liner perphaps?).

I also have a feeling this might be his last SEL-season in a while...

I think he will fit well into the Canucks team.

Exactly which defensive center in Vancouver is he supposed to beat for a spot on the team? Chubarov? Lindgren? The Canucks are too deep to have Davidsson over, at least for the time being. The canucks should trade his rights for picks or another prospect to a team that needs him.

what I meant with that is that I do believe he'll move over the pond again after this season, and spend 2-4 years in the NHL.
