So the Rangers gave Lundqvist a legend contract for what will be one of their top 3 careers players of all time, and their best goalie of all time.

Is a couple extra million really so horrible if it would make or break Henrik staying in NY?

Nope, not horrible...had to do it. He's a Ranger for life.

Lundqvist: 7 years $59 Million ($8.5 Million AAV).

Of course the Rangers overpaid, but for a little over a million/year, they're the type of team that can do that. Also, can't lose your best player/face of the franchise.
You can if you're the Rangers. You'll get bad press, but you'll be fine. If they dealt him to the Oilers at the draft for a mountain of assets people would eventually understand.

Absolutely brutal. Kills their cap situation for close to the next decade.

Wowza. Even for Lundqvist, that's a lot of money.

Cam Talbot, superstar, ain't gonna like that.

In all seriousness, its not like he wouldn't have made that on the open market, and he is the face of the Rangers franchise.

Surprised by this. That's a lot of money. Doesn't seem like he took a discount at all.

I know, right? The cap is locked in places at this level forever. I mean, Its not as if its going to rise by a few million this coming summer alone.

It's not even that I think he's not worth this kind of money, but they really couldn't get him to sign to a lower number given the season he's having?

Seems like they gifted him a bit here, and that's the kind of stuff that will kill your cap numbers down the road.

Yikes that's a lot of keesh!!

But I guess you can't let a goalie like that walk. Props to his agent?

Doesn't matter. If you're paying that much more for your goaltender than your competition is for theirs, then you're at a disadvantage at every other position. Especially if that goaltender is currently league average and on the decline.

Haha how does adding $1.625M to Lundqvist's current contract kill their cap situation?

Seriously, some real Randian economists here.

Maybe more. Eliot Friedman said he expects the cap to go up to around 90M in 4-5 years. During that time these contracts wont be so bad.

Because they were already paying too much for goaltending?

There's a time to cut bait and move on. And that time was right now.

Hey now, cheap shot.

But the point is the same, NYR weren't going to be abe to do much mor important with the difference in change than make sure Henrik stayed around.

What ever will they do? Richards is gone after this season, and the cap is going up. They're doomed!

I'm not going to get into Rask vs Lundquist but obviously it makes Rask's deal look good.

Then again, it's still a good deal for the Rags. At the end of the day, there are only a handful of consistently great goalies in the NHL and Hank is one of them.

Think of all the space they would've had if they'd moved on!

there is taking a hometown discount and then there is taking a hometown premium, he is an amazing goalie but this one is tough on the books
