Our window is starting now.

I know its laughable based on our results currently but bear with me.

The fact is that our window to compete is now in the next 2-3 years, not in 4-6. We are 14 million dollars under the cap; what would we be if we spent 10 million on a couple of serviceable D?

We have Karlsson back as a dominant D, have a top 3 winger in Ryan finally have center depth, got a couple top 6 wingers with Zbad and MacArthur coming up, and have 2 top goalies.

What we don't have is an owner willing to sign a few free agents to augment our D depth. Instead we are pretending guys like Gryba, Boro, Phillips, Corvo, are anything better than #5/6/7 guys

We need to add D now to help resign Ryan and attract free agents, instead of waiting for our now average prospect pool to come and save us,

If we play the wait and see game who nows if Ryan stays or how Karlsson will be in 5 years, Spezza will be retired/ on LTIR, and guys like Ceci, Stone, Lazar will still be figuring out the league.

My hope is that next season with ryan spezza methot and andy on their last year of their contracts , we make a mini run and sign some good second line dmen to back loaded contracts with the assumption that we probably won't be able to sign everyone so andy and maybe others money can be used to offset the ufas upcoming bump in salary

Seems like it. We're currently scoring third in the conference behind only Pittsburgh and Washington. Andy has been a bit shaky, but nevertheless our goaltenders are top-notch. Shore up the D and we're set.

nope. too many passengers right meow. Needs at least 1 more elite D and 1 elite F. No team's window is ''6 years down the line'', way too many variables.

The team doesn't have a window right now, it depends on how the prospects develop and what happens in free agency. And yes I think it's possible to win without spending to the cap.

Tell everyone to start buying tickets then. You need to make money to spend money.

This.

Everyone seems to be talking about the internal budget while the fans refuse to buy tickets. I have been to all but 1 home game this year and not one has been a sellout. Not even the glorious Alfie returning could bring a sellout.

If all the silly finnicky fans would just buy tickets I'm sure Melnyk would have a bit more money to spend.

Are Sens fans so spoiled that once a team struggles everyone is ready to throw the savior of our franchise under the bus? Why don't you all try being a Preds fan?

Also look at the prior years. Now add the fact the Sens have 3 playoffs rounds in the last 2 years.

Ticket sales/fan support is not the problem.

the team needs to spend money in order for people to buy tickets

i have been to 6 home games this year and none of them have been a sell out

last 2 seasons fans were fine with not spending money since they knew we were rebuilding , but we took significant steps forward in those 2 seasons

then this offseason cashing in our first round pick was a sign that we are now contending but outside of that move we didnt make a move to show the fan base that we are serious about contending

it was like with the blue jays, for the longest time fans wanted a larger budget, and the owner said we will increase budget when we get more fans in the seats. the onus lies on the owners and for the jays as soon as the owner increased the budget and the team started making moves to show they were serious, fans started showing up

its the same thing here, as soon as we start spending money we will start selling out again, not to mention any additional revenue from making the playoffs will be a nice bonus for melnyk

I honestly believe he's just using the team as leverage for his casino. I think it's that simple. Knowing this makes me less likely to buy tickets.

From what I can find, Ottawa's attendance record was 6th in the league last year and that's with us missing players like Spezza and Karlsson for almost the entire season. Attendance is struggling this year largely in part because we lost Alfredsson. We lost Alfredsson because Melnyk's a total cheap ass. Fans aren't as dumb as Melnyk must think. We're well aware of his penny pinching and what it's costing the team.
Just for the record, I've converted several Alfredsson haters into Melnyk haters by informing them as to why Alfredsson really left.

I think even if games were selling out, Melnyk would still be crying poor and claiming he NEEDs a casino in order to spend to the cap.

I do agree that Ottawa has a great, but small window of opportunity here. They have a lot of young talent who are going to command much larger figures when their entry-level contracts are up. I have very little faith in Melnyk taking advantage of this opportunity before it slips through his fingers.

Correctamundo we need to go for it now before the Spezza, Ryan and etc. contracts end.
If Melnyk keeps being a tightwad and we can't renew one of those guys then we won't be contending for a long, long, loooooooooooong time.

That's why making the playoffs and having a good showing this year is so important, because we don't need to lose another captain and a star player like Ryan due to mediocre performances.

John Shannon just said on Tim and Sid that it looks like Ottawa will be trying to shed salary. If this is our window it's a 70 year old window with a rotten sash and has been smashed to ****.

Other years the owners have stated that the actual paid attendance, when they were sellouts was closer to what we have now, so...that explains a lot on why the owner spends what he does.

This Melnyk bickering is ridiculous.

I bet you don't know the real reason why Alfie left. Everyone has their theory.

Ottawa's attendance the last few years was papered, they came out and said so and in fact the paid attendance this year is on par with last year. Not good. 125,000 freebies equals how much?

We also have low to mid range ticket pricing. Lowest of all Canadian teams.

This team can play a lot better than it has so far, but it would be a stretch to say this is somehow our window. I honestly think that last year was a high point for this group of players (at least the players who were here), and that the massive scale of injuries stopped us short of making an honest run. I can't predict what next year will bring.

True, but nobody knows if Melnyk is going to refuse to spend as long as he is the owner. Perhaps his plan has been to spend less while they're preparing the team to make a run at some point in the future.

It's conjecture, but so is declaring the opposite.

My point is that nobody knows for sure, one way or the other.

Phoenix made the Western Conference Finals two years ago. What's the size of their payroll exactly? No that much more than ours.
